BUTTONS AND BADGES.
- ■ NEW INSIGNIA FOR POLICE. , [THE PEESS Spoci&l Service.] WELLINGTON, January 18. In six or seven weeks' time the new buttons' and badges for the New Zealand Police Force will arrive from Home, and as soon as possible thereafter a start will be made with £he new uniforms of|. lighter material, manufactured in Dunedin. At present the badges are not distinctive enough, and, the new design will be entirely different from that now in use. ~ The badges will be made, of silver, and will consist of the Royal coat of arms, supported by two fern\ leaves, and having«fct the oottom a scroll with the words, "New Zealand /Police Force." ' ;■ ' , The new buttons will also be a distinct improvement'< on those now used, which have an»unpleasant and expensive habit oT going soft like gelatine in wet or very hot weather. They will be made of metal, surrounded by the words, ''New Zealand Police." ~ ■:,, In additidn, the familiar helmet will be replaced _in the daytime and in fine weather by the shako, supplies of which are to be made by a Wellington firm. Contrary to current rumour, the shako will bear an appearance entirely different from that of the French kepi, and will be issued irrespective of the supply of uniform cloth. At night and in wet weather the dark badges now iit' use will be worn. l
