SEWERAGE.

EXTENSION OF SYSTEM. PROGRESS OF THE WORK. Last evening the Christchurch Drainage Board held its final meeting during its present term of office, and tho chairman, Mr H. J. Otley, reviewed the work done in expending the loan of £700,000 raised in 1923 for sewerage extension. His report was as follows: "The loan proposal was carried in July, l'J2.i. Contracts were let in February and March, 1924, for the supply of <.-ast-iron pipes, \alves, etc., coneiete pressure pipes, concrete sewer pipes, ;uid earthenware pipes. The company to which the contract was let for the supply of concrete sewerage and pressure pipes established a faetorv in Christchurch, and pipes were available lor sewerage work in June, 1924. A shipment of iron pipes having come to hand in the same month, the first contracts for construction were then let. 'The following is a summary of the work done and in hand at date: Length of sewers laid in contracts now completed: main sewers 11 miles 11.89 clnins, reticulation 12 miles 3.91 chains: total 23 miles 15.8 chains. Length of sewers in contracts now let: main sewers 1 mile 2.03 chains, reticulation 28 miles 65.21 chains; total 29 miles 67.24 chains. Total length of sewers in contracts completed and let: main sewers 12 miles 13.92 chains, reticulation 40 miles 69.12 chains; grand total 53 miles 3.04 chains. Total length of sewers in scheme as estimated, 125 miles. Rising mains laid: 6 miles 5.43 chains. Total length of rising mains in scheme as estimated, 9 miles.

Pumping Stations. "Contracts have been let for tanks and buildings required for the seven main pumping stations. In two of the stations the pumping machinery has been installed, and pumps and motors are now available for the remaining five stations. Plans are being prepared for three of the subsidiary stations, and a contract has been let for the supply of the necessary machinery for same.

''Sewage Farm: New outfall drain to Estuary, 53 chains in length, now completed. New paddocks: A contract has been let for the formation of 53$ acres of new paddocks. The area mentioned will be the net area available for irrigation. In addition to the formation of paddocks, the contract includes the placing and rough levelling of sand on over 20 acres of land lying between Palmer's road and the Estuary.
