NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIORA. A meeting of the Bangiora Athletic Club was held on Monday evening, Mr J. J. Matthews presiding. The secretary, Mr C. Devlin, submitted tho bal-'ance-sheet in connexion with the sports meeting held on January Bth. The receipts were £ls Os od, expenditure irt) 12s, the cash paid out for cash event, amounted to £29 4s, and orders toi amateur events amounted to fc-lo -sou. A loss of £25 lis 7d was sustained oyer the meeting. In reviewing the meeting, the chairman said it was veiy unfortunate that the Association had incurred such a loss, especially at sucn a time, when they were trying to reform the club. It was very regrettable they did not receive the support of the public as they should have done. The balance-sheet as read was adopted. It was decided to circularise all members who had not paid their annual subscription. Should the amount he not sufficient to wipe off trie deficiency, a further meeting will be held to discuss ways of raising the amount required. The Fire Brigade at its meeting on Monday night, appointed Superintendent ti.'W. Tyler delegate to the United Fire Brigades' Association Conference, which is to be held at Gisborne m February. It was also decided to nominate him for the office of vice-presi-dent of the Association, and for vicepresident of the U.F.B. Accident Society. Through the generosity of a few interested persons, a very fine Giant s Stride.' costing about £lB, has been erepted at Waikuku' beach free of cost to the beach Association. . There were 250 cars parked in the enclosure, and the Beach Improvement Association will benefit to the extent of £-1 12s by the sale of hot water. On Monday evening, the Manchester Unity Oddfellows held a purple degreo meeting at the Oddfellows' Hall. District Grand Master Bro. H. Dickoff presided over a good attendance of past grands representative of the Rangiora, Ohoka, and Woodend Lodges. The other officers were P.G Bro W. Gardner, Acting Deputy G.M.; P.P.G.M., Bro. C. R. Golding, Acting 1.P.G.M.; Bro. C. I. Jennings, district secretnry; P-U-Brp. H. Little, warden; and P.G. Bro. i R'. A. Scott Tyler. A motion of sympathy with the widow and family ot the iate Bro. W. J- I. Daggett was passed. The purple degree was then conferred on Bro. Rex. Cutler, of the Woodend Lodge, and Bro. L. P Qmnn. of the Ohoka Lodge. At the close or the degree meeting, the Excelsior of Past Grands met, Bro. Dick- - off presiding. A motion of sympathy with Bro. E Payne and other members pf the family of the late Mrs Payne, whose death occurred on Thursday last, .was passed, and was acknowledged by Bro. Payne, Bro. A. A. King wrote resigning the office of secretary and Bro. R. A. Scott was elected. Yesterday was she hottest day. experienced here this season. During the afternoon the heat was very oppressive. In most of the shops the thermometer registered 81 degrees, and in the open 99 degrees.
KAIAPOI. The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Regatta Committee was held in the Cycle Club Rooms, Kaiapoi, on Monday evening. The chairman, Mr H. O. Revell, presided over a good tendance. Motions of sympathy were passed with the relatives of the late Mr H. A. Cooper, the committee, -and Mi W. E. 'Parnham, who was an enthusiastic supporter of rowing in Kaiapoi. The annual balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £BS 17s 7d, was received and adopted. The following officers were elected:—Chairman, Mr H. C. Revell; vicechairmariL jj r r,_ j p Dunn; secretary, Mr J. H. Mealings; auditor, Mr J Hirst; committee, Messrs J. Hirst, E. Morris, H. Rinaldi, W. Mealings, W H. Stack, "ty. J. Joy, J. Bumip, W. Joy, G. Clarke, A. Joy, P. H. Wylie, H. Hemingway, and A. S Logan. It was. decided to hold the annual regatta' on March 19th, and to adopt the 1926 programme of prize money for rowing events. Wijih the object of augmenting the regatta funds', it was decided tpTio]d a dance on February 19th, also a picture benefit at an early date. It was, resolved that the usual dance should be held on the night of the regatta. HORORATA, The spell of warm, fjnp weather broke on Tlarsday morning, when a sudden change came from the south-west. A steady downpour of rain continued until midnight. However, Friday morning WAS fine,- and the weather has been hot and sultry .since. Crops are well advanced and fanners hope for good returns. Feed is plentiful and potato crops are looking well, Mr J. Creighton's many friends will be pleased to learn that he is making good progress since his operation at the public hospital. Mr John McKenzie, of the Postal staff, is on annual holiday leave, and is being relieved by Mr F. Wright. Mrs S. Lamburd, of Khandallah, Wellington, is visiting Hororata, and is staying with Mrs G. L. Hight.
WAIKUKU. The quarterly meeting of the Wood-end-Sejton Methodist Church circuit was held in the Waikuku Church recently, the Rev, W. B. Cuming presiding over a good attendance of officials. The chairman reported that a member of the copgregation, Mrs C. E. Skevington, had died'during the quarter and an expression of sympathy was passed with the family, the secretary being asked to forward a letter of condolence. The treasurer reported that the receipts for the quarter did not quite meet the expenditure, the balance-sheet showing a small deficit. It was decided to hold the Waikuku anniversary services in a month's time, with the Harvest Festival- at a later date. Messrs B. J. Archer and S. H. Griffiths were re-appointed circuit stewards tor .another year. Mr 6. H. Griffiths was appointed representative to the aniumi Methodist conference, to bo held in Auckland in March. The appointment of a substitute was left over tin later. . Recent visitors at Waikuku include: —Misses Connie and Joyco Brown he (South Canterbury), Winnie and ISellic Beaton (Methven), Jean Madams (Belfast), Marjorie Bunting (kn'npoO. Ngaire Morgan (Christchurch), Maetei Eugene Frawley. Miss Dreaver and Miss Sloano are staying with Miss Jackson (Tiroaru). Miss Jean Shephard is staying with Constable and Mrs A. Orchard (MetnMiss Cathie McMillan spent a few days with relatives at Motonau. Master Rav Shephard is staying with relatives at Mt. OXFORD. The washhouse, with all its contents, of Mr T. Ulmrick, of Ashley Gorge road, Oxford, was totally destroyed by lire on Monday morning, shortly after ton o'clock. The washing was completed and everything seemed safe, when tire was discovered issuing from the door. Fortunately the breeze was easterly, or the residence and other buildings would have been destroyed, there was a small insurance on tho building, but the loss sustained is considerably in advance of the insurance.
