The Taranaki horses Mint Leaf and Oration havo been going particularly Troll in thoir work at Hawera. The Taranaki trainer, E. George, will be represented at Wellington by Te Monanui, Eoyal Mint, Mint Leaf, Melissa, and Oration. Te Monanui has been doing splendid work on the track, having improved by the racing in Auckland. He should be in great nick when facing the starter at Trentham. Koyal Mint has also come on well, but may not bo quito. capable of running out one mile and a half. Oration has been •working very generously, and is staying on well. He looks like making up for past disappointments. Mint Leaf ■hould be well suited in the Douro Cup. Befemoana and Lady Cavendish were xesponsible ior a pleasing work-out £t New Plymouth last week, and aro expected to be at tho top of their form for Wellington engagements. Stormy and Cawnpore, two Aucklandowned hprses engaged at Wellington, ■were responsible for a pleasing workout on Saturday. J. T. Jamieson will have High Finance, Ti Tree, Ring the Bell, and Dimmer racing at the Wellington Meeting.
E. W. McTavish wlil rido Shirley in the Telegraph Handicap at Tre'ntham. D. Cotton will ride Gold Mint in his [engagements this week. Dimmer and Eoyal Picture, engaged in the Buapehu Handicap at Wellington, are both grey in colour. The latter is considered a very smart galloper. Celerity 11. has been turned out for a spell, at her owner's place in Southland.
L.' J. Ellis wll rido Eeccipt in. Wellington engagements. The imported Eoscnor is to take part in tho Wellington Meeting this week. Unless he is sold in the meantime, ho will probably be taken across to Australia with Mr Cambridgo wl-*n he goes next monU. When Kilkeo fell at the last fence in the Aparima Steeplechase on Saturday he broko his neck. Kilkee was taken to Southland by the' late Mr Geo. Dorgan. For the latter and his brother, , Mr Tom Dorgan, Kilkeo was a good stake-winner, but latterly became' almost unmanageable at the barrier. He wag then used as a hunter, and gave promise of making a "good horse over country. ■ ' It is understood that though there •more somo ninety applications received for the position of- secretary to the Dunedin Jockey and Forbury Park Trotting/Clubs, no appointment was made • at Thursday's meeting of the committee of the D.J.C. It is reported thatthe latter body is not now in favour of sharing, a secretary with the Trotting Club, and that fresh applications will , be callod for the position of secretary of tho D.J.C., and the successful applicant will bo required to undertake somo ' of the outside work in connexion with tha club's property at- Wingatui., / Eoyal Despatch gave a bad display of temper at the Vincent Meeting, and is evidently a very uncortain; sort of horse. In the last race at the Meeting he broke away twice from tho barrier, and galloped over a couple of furlongs 1 i before Voight could pull him up. Then' ■ he got the best of th start, and leading ■ all the way, he won in a canter. Both Star Stranger and Rapine will tun in the Wellington Cup, and will ho ridden by B. H. Morris and H. Heed respectively. Heed, who was married in Sydney last Wednesday to Misa Jean Scott, of Randwick, returnied with his bride on Monday. , This week's issue of the "Weekly v Press and Referee," which will be ou eale\ to-dav, contains the usual features by Spectator, Wayfarer, Antisitienes, and W.A., besides provincial news from special correspondents in all centres. The prospects of the forth- • coming Meeting at Trentham are disoussedi also other matters of interest to sportsmen. Though matters have . been on the quiet side in the light harness world, Miles and Searchlight have a budget of most interesting news to relato, and the latter discusses the Dunedin Cud Hnndican and the prosjwcts for the Hawke's Bay and Te Aroha Meetings. In the general section, there is much to ho found of interest to followers of outdoor pastimes, such as cricket/ tennis, athletics, and swimming. TROTTING NOTES. ' Acceptances- for the Forbury Park TT.C.'s Summer Meeting close on Friday at 5 p.m. Four of P. Riddle's team, Parkwood, Peter McKinney, Golden Bubble, and Margalong, worked two miles, and gave a pleasing display. Logan Lily was also associated with the quartet, and proved equal to holding her own.
Tho weather conditions were favourable and the track fast at Addington yesterday, but the work aroused littlo interest as the fast work was very limited.
Proud Ata, Bold Bill, Stunt Artist, Queen Ida, and Routine were associated in a work-out ovc a couple of circuits, and although not extended, it was' a pleasing effort on the part of all horses. Prom a moving start Nelson Derby spaced a mile and a half in 3.24. It jwaa a nice effort and he pulled up well. Logan Holme easily held Rose Pointer Safe at the 4nd of twelvo furlongs. {The former is very Veil at present. Becky Logan was allotted threetjuarter pace exercise over a couple of feiiles, and paced In her usual frco style. Elzear was seen t» advantage while trotting a rail* and * ML
The American-bred pacer Direct Todd, who looks in good fettle, covered a mile and a quarter, without being extended. E. C. McDermott drove Homer a mile and a half at a sound pace, a similar task being allotted to Erin's Koyal, who has recently been taken in hand by the Addington mentor. Direct Wood paced evenly over a journey. She appears to have done plenty of work, and is overdue for a win as she has not won a race since the latter end of last season. H. Gaskill worked Little Logan, Lady Embrace, and a maiden by Harold Dillon from Louvain Chimes, but they were not asked to do their best. Reverie, half-brother to Napland, negotiated several circuits at half-pace. He trotted evenly, but at present does not show much speed. T G Fox gave Gabardine some strong work.'' The sister to Carbinia has not been long up, but it will be Borne time before she is seen at her best. Peter Wilkins, who is now an inmate of J. McKendry's stable, was given sprinting exercise, and showed a useful turn of speed. The pacing gelding Brutus is a recent addition to J. Bryce's stable at Hornbj. WAIROA 'R.C. FIRST DAY'S RESULTS. TBENTHAM TRAINING NOTES. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, January 18. A heavy fog almost completely blotted out proceedings at Trentham this morning, and only one or two gallops could be timed. Trainers, rather than wait for to lift and run horses in the heat, oispensed with timing. Hynnnna and Star Ranger on the tan jumped away at the mile post to the winning post in 1.45 2-5, finishing practically on terms. It was a good effort, as the track was not by any means fast. Tanadees wont a solid two rounds on the ton. Vesperus, -who looks well, was worked round the tan, and sprinted home. Laughing Prince, Exhibition, and Wild Pigeon sprinted down from the five furlong barrier on the course proper. ,„.,., Nadarino finished in front of Grand Knight at the eDd of fivo furlongs on the tan.
