LAWN TENNIS.
N.S.W. TEAM'S VISIT, CANTERBURY PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. The annual provincial lawn tennis championships will commence on the Association's ground, Wilding Park, at 9 a.m. on' Thursday, and will be continued on Friday and Saturday. It is hoped that the finals will be played on Saturday afternoon. This will be the first occasion for many years that those championships have been played on turf courts, and the new grass courts which have been prepared at Wilding Park promise to be in excellent condition, and in the general arrangements for the tournament nothing is "boing overlooked. Great interest centres in the meeting by virtue of tho presence of tho members of the New South Wales players. A stadium capablo of seating approximately 2000 persons has been erected around the centre courts, and tho officials of the Association are hopeful that this accommodation will be taxed. Special provision has been made for holders of life-memberships. Mr R. Browning, secretary of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, has beon advised that the members of the New South Wales team will arrive in Christchurch tomorrow morning. . ... The Mayor will extend a civic reception to the visitors in the City Council Chambers tomorrow at noon, and in addition to the Mayor the speakers will include Mr Frederick Wilding, K.C., Mr W. N. Soay, president of the Association, and Mr William Goss. Tho mombors of the team will probably practice nt Wilding Park to-morrow afternoon.
N.S.W. V. WAIRARAPA. (JBISS ASSOCUTIOV TBLBGEAH.) i MASTERTON, January 17. The New South Wales tennis team played a match to-day against the Wairarapa team, supplemented by G. Ollivier, N. R. C. Wilson, and C. E. Malfroy. The visitors wero successful by seven matches to two. Results:— Singles.—N. Peach beat Ollivier, 3-6, 6-4, 8-6; A. L. North beat N. R. C. Wilson, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1; Fitzgerald lost to Malfroy, 6-4, 9-11, 4-6; McCausland beat Welch, 7-5, 6-3; Brewster beat Miller, 6-3, 6-1; F. Peach beat J. Martin, 11-9, 6-2. Doubles. —Peach and Peach lost to Ollivier and Wilson,' 5-7, 3-6; North and McCausland beat Malfroy and Hodder, 6-2, 6-4; Brewster and Fitzgerald beat F. W. Martin and Tavernor, 6-1, 6-3. DAVIS CUP.; SELECTION OF AUSTRALIAN TEAM. MELBOURNE, January 17.A meeting of the Australian Tennis Council appointed a committeo to watch the form of contestants in the Australian tennis championships at the end of'this month, and to pick a team, .if thought advisable, to participate in the 1927 Davis Cup matches. The Council agreed to permit matches between amateurs and professionals, providing the State Tennis Associations were 'placed in full control of the matches, and the proceeds were devoted to some tennis purpose. It also decided that Australia should vote in favour of Germany being allowed to enter the Davis Oup competition, and favouring the Cup boing competed for annually.
