MEN'S HATS.
THE GERMAN ARTICLE.
[THE PEESB Special tarries.]
AUCKLAND. January 17. England's partiality for bat* mad* in Germany, 1,708,000 of which were, according to a recent cablegram, inkported last year, is not shared by th» people of New Zealand, Various mercers and hatters stated there was an entire absence in NewZealand of men's hata made in Germany. "Judging by the samples I have seen from time to time it is improbable they will ever get a hold in New Zealand," said the salesman in one of the leading shops. "They were dear, poor in quality, and put out m styles we discarded ten years ago." The manager of another firm said he thought a mistake had been made and that the message referred to a new style of felt hate popular among women, made, not in Germany, but in Czeoho-Slovakia. "I agree that men's hats made in Germany are right out of date," he added, "and further tho English manufacturers are turning oat an article that in quality, style, and pr<ce will defy competition anywhere in.the world."
