IMPROVING THE STANDARD.
MORE SUGGESTIONS BY E. H. BOWLEY.
[THE PBEBS Bpecld Betvlee.]
AUCKLAND, January 17.
Auckland's professional coach, E. H. Bowley, had further interesting comments to make on New Zealand cricket to-day. "Cricketers here are very keen," he said, "and are very good 6port«men,. The Auckland team with which I toured the South Island was one of the happiest and most sporting sides with which I have ever been associated, but a lack of more good cricket and tno small number of representative matches are keeping the standard of the game comparatively low." ,
Question of Finance. Mr Bowley said he perfectly that finance was vital when the question of good cricket was considered. Even the English Counties would bo ia a poor wav if they relied on gates alone for their financial backing. The i membership fees of the County Club gave the various Counties most of their money, but the population of N«w Zealand and the interest in the game were as yet too small (or such a system to be adopted here. It was unwise to rush matters, but the' better the cricketers the better the Rates would be. ,
Pad Play. Overdone. "A thing that strikes me about New Zealand cricket," iiaid the coach, "is the way in which batsmen orerdo: Pad play. This applies mora to the South Island than it does to the North, and it undoubtedly has a deteriorating effect on the game instead of improving it. I certainly believe in using my pads, as a second line of defence, bat I maintain that a batsman must gat into position to nlay the ball bafor* doing so. It is not cricket to hold the bat up in the air,; and push the ball away with the pads."
Hard Time tat Bowlers. "The batting of the New Zealand side," he added, "should be very good, but I. am afraid the bowlers win be hard put to it at times. I want to see the team dp well, for I am almost a New Zenlander, myself now. For the sake of New Zealand cricket 1 should like to see the win.all its County matches bar one; and. wit one my own, Sussex." Y
