SHORTAGE OF LABOUR
With the influx of shipping into Lyttelton on Saturday morning not nearly enough labour was available, and several of the vessels were undermanned in the morning. However, the shortage did nob last long, as several steamers took their departure during She" day, thus releasing a large i,uW of meM. The position ttKlo-y should be nearly normal. During the past few months many of the watertiders, "owing to the dearth Of" shipping, were compelled to seek employment elsewhere, so ..that the number now is somewhat depleted, it is expected, however, that m&jiy Pf these will return now that the busiest time of the year is.at hand. A fow non-unionists, unemployed from Christchurch, - Were successful in getting work, but tho result is not very satisfactory to them, as, as soon as a union man is available, the services of. the newcomer hate to be dispensed with.
