—*— lIEAD-OF-RIVER RACES. To decide what club shall be entitled to be known as the head of the'liver (he second of a seric3 of rowing races was held on the Avon on Saturday afternoon. The results were : SEXlOfi DOUBLE SCULLS. First heat—Canterbury (F. Brown, Oborn), 1; Union Xo. 1 (\V. Whitfinglon, L. Bycrs), 2. Second heat-Avon (C. Stiles, G. Stiles), 1; Union Xo. 2 (G. Duggan, L. Duggan), 2. Final—Canterbury 1, Avon 2. At Cowlishaw's corner Avon was in the lead, but Canterbury thereafter made the pace, and won without much difficulty. MAIDEN FOUR-OAR. First heat—Union iF Duggan, E. Weir, H Booth, H. Waddell),' 1: Canterbury (Stephenson, Bacon, Hill, Moon), 2. Second. heat—Avon Xo. 1 (A. Harley, J. Lane, J. Harley, J. Brixton), 1; Avon Xo. 2 (L. Webb, H. Lenauze, G. Rushworth, A. Woodham), 2. Final—Union, 1: Avon Xo. 1, 2.
Both crews fought out the race neck and neck until near the finish, when Union went to the front and won by a length and a half.
