ASSOCIATION COMPETITIONS. SIXTH ROUND. There was perfect weather on Saturday Then the »ixth round grade-matches were commenced. The wickets were in splendid erder, and the scoring ali round was fairly high, the weaker teams, especially, showing greatly improved batting .form. East Cbristchurch v. Linwood. Linwood early demonstrated their superierity over East. The latter were all disposed of in less than two hours, McEwin being the only one to offer much opposition. Talbot was in great form with the ball, and 'hree times he knocked the middle stump clean out of the ground. Talbot repeated his iuccess with the bat, he and Boon both showing brilliant butting, whilst towards the end Orchard added spice to the play by hitting five sixes, three of them being off McEwin, und hit over tho big boundary. Saturday's games provided two surprises, v.-hen Council defeated last year's champions by 36 runs in the first innings, and after being 55 runs behind ou the first innings, Shirley defeated Greens by 25 runs. Woolston registered 435 for 5 wickets and declared, but only secured a two-point win over MarUt, by 370 runs, on the first innings. , . ... HAWKE CUP. TARANAKI V. HAWKE'S BAY. (IHESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) NEW PLYMOUTH, January 16. After the second day's play in the Hawke Cup match Taranakj requires 53 runs to retain the Cup, with eix wickets in hand. Having made 91 in tho first innings, Hawke'e Bay disposed of Taranaki for a total of 109. In the second striko, Hawke's Bay, on a wicket considerably improved, gave a much better diaplav for IS6. Lowry played a fine innings for 88, but had an extremely lucky escape in tho forties. Thereafter lie went on to rattlo up his scoro rapidly. Cole secured tho fino average of Bix for 52. Requiring 171, Taranaki's opening was not particularly promising, but when stumps wcro drawn the eide had reached US for the loss of four wickets, the not out men beincr Kingston and Bottrill, both of whom appeared likely to stay, the former having made 21 and the latter 24. Kden, playing against North Shore, declared at nine for 324 (Butler 97, Cooper 59). North Shore, who had made 100 in the first innings, played out time in the second innings/making 161 for six wickets. Eden thus won on the first innings. University, playing Y.M.C.A„ made 214 (Kelly 65 not out. Geo 51).. In the game between Albion and Cansbrook, Albion, who had lost two wickets for 190 on the first day, declared with tho score at 286 (Shepherd 7a, Barron 43). Carißbrook replied with 238 for four wickets (Bunt 157, Gourley not out 32, Dickinson 25). The match was drawn. Blunt has scored centuries in three successive innings in club cricket, 175 against Dunedin, 102 against Grange, and 157 against Albion. ... . t Dunedin scored a two-point win _on the first innings against Grange. Dunedin, with four wickets down for 141 on the first day, continued and took -the score to 216 for five wickets, when they declared. Grange made 116, Walker, 37, being the top scorer. For Dunedin, Torrance, three for 23, and McGregor, four for 05, bowled best.
