A meeting of tlie Central Cala Comiiiirtct' was'Vhl in the Coum-il Cham--I'i'i's i.ii Thursday, the Mayor. Mr J. tiaml.de, presiding over a goo.l attendance. The Tramway Heard, in roply to tlic Committee's application in the matter of concession, stated that the application would be placed before the Board at its next sitting. It was decided that entries for the Amateur Flat Event should close with the secretaries, Messrs llardie and Sugdeu, on the IStli inst. The secretaries reported that the Gala Queen prizes, valued at £-•->, were now on view in Mr Hargrove's window, and that entries for the competition would close on Friday, -Ist mst. It was arranged that the Gala Queen prizes should be presented by the Mayor, Mr J. Gamble, on Monday evening, the 24th, at the Premier Picture Theatre. It was unanimously agreed that_ the ; appointment of a judge of the six hnal- : ists bo left in the hands of the chairman. New Brighton Cricket Club. The following games are arranged for this afternoon: Second grade (A) v. Old Collegians at Elmwood, No. 5; 2nd Grade (B) v. West, at New Brighton, No. 1; 3rd Grade (A) v. Eiccartou, at New Brighton, No. 2; 3rd Grade (B) v. Sydenham, at Sydenham, No. 3; 4th Grade v. Technical, at New Brighton, No. 3. Borough Picnic. Being unable to make satisfactory arrangements with the Tramway Board, tho joint committee of the schools and borough employees have to abandon their intention of holding the borough picnic at Pleasant Point on February lGth. The joint committees meet on Wednesday, when some other site will be chosen," probably Motuliarara or Kaiapoi. Presbyterian Boys' Home Camp. The boys from the Presbyterian Home, Bligh's road, /"apanui, have been camping in South Brighton for the past two weeks, and have now returned to town. They were entertained one evening by friends of the local congregation in the Bible Class room. After tea they adjourned to the open air, where outdoor games were indulged in. Returning to the hall they later contributed a number of musical and other items, including community singing. After supper, the Rev. J. S. Young expressed the pleasure the local friends had had in entertaining them. Mr R. D. Rule suitably replied on behalf of the members of the staff, Mrs Rule, Miss Finlayson, himself, and the boys. Surf Bathing and Pishing. During the early and middle part of tho week large crowds visited the beach while surf bathing was indulged in during the day and evening. Some record catches of fish have been made from the pier both of herring, cod, and kahawai, and all in splendid condition. Personal. The Rev. C. "W. Maclaverty, vicar of New Brighton, is returning from England, and will resume charge of the parochial district, taking over from the acting vicar, Canon J. A. Hamilton, on Thursday, February 10th.
