HEAVY LOSSES.

FIRES IN WELLINGTON. REPORT FOR THE YEAR. [THE PRESS Special Serrlc*.] WELLINGTON, January 14. In his report of the operations of the Wellington Kre Brigade from January Ist, 1928, to December 31st, 1926, the superintendent states that calls received totalled 429, which is the highest recorded for the past ten years. Notwithstanding the increase in the number of calls, it was pleasing to note that the city escaped any serious conflagration. Two notable fires occurred during .the year, that at the Dominion Motors, Ltd., and Louis Salek, where the damage in each fire exceeded £IO,OOO. The estimated value of property on which the fires occurred was £1,151,524. Insurance on the property on which thje fires occurred was £777,584, and the estimated loss covered by insurance £78,726. Tho total estimated loss for the year was £78,720.
