SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP. Acceptances close to-day for the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting and the Annual Meetings of the Foxton and Bay of Islands Racing Clubs. Nominations will be taken to-day for tlio Kgmont and Gisborno Summer Mooting?, Pimedin Autumn Meeting, and To Kuiti and Rotorua Racing Clubs' Annual Meeting.

The rain which fell yesterday should have a beneficial effect upon the track at Ashburton, where the local club's Summer Meeting takes place to-mor-row. With good acceptances all round, some excellent racing should bo witnessed For the convenience of patrons a special train will leave Christchurch at 10.10 a.m., stopping at intermediate stations. The return journey will bo commenced at 5.40 p.m. Royal Divorco is in work again at Tmitham. It is not intended to race him lor sonio time yet, but he is gradually losing his superfluous condition.

Heroic, is to be retired to the stud next season, a three years' lease of him having been obtained by the Thompson Bros., the well-known breeders. M. MeCartcn, the New Zealand jockey, enjoyed a groat run of success during the- 'Perth Cup carnival. Although he was beaten in the Perth Cup on the favourite, Spearage, he won three races on the second day of the meeting, one being on Tich, who won the AIT-Asrcd Stakes. McCarten also rode Carus, who was at long odds, into second place ju the Derby.

Captain Gage Williams is working a six-year-old gelding named Mandarcno by Solferino—Golden Pippin. Mandarcno was purchased by Mr K L. Uifklii'ord as a yearling and was turned out until recently. He is showing some promise on the tracks, and will probably make his first appearance on the last day of the forthcoming Wellington Meeting.

An English writer, in reviewing the season's results so far as jockeys' successes are concerned, comments on the fact that virtually none of the flat race-riders wears spurs.

During the season just closed in England his Majesty won only three races of a total valuo of £S7G.

At the Hawko's Bay Summer Meeting a very promising hack was produced in Aston, an Irish-bred son of Landgrave—Bridle Way, who is owned by Mr H. R. Campbell. Aston appears in tlio race book as a three-year-old, which means that he is only a littlo over 2| years old. so that be may be expected to do better later on. He is a powerful lengthy chap, though not handsome, but handsome is as handsome does, and he hits out in good style when it comos to racing. His victory was very easily gained. V. Dempsey was not long riding a good winner after his return to Australia, for be scored on Quintus in the Standish Handicap at Flemington on New Year's Day. He also rode Kridanus (King John—Starglow) into second place in the Bagofc Handicap. A vcarling' filly by Leigh ton from .Statuette, owned and bred by Mr G. D. Beatson, should bo able to gallop fast if there is anything in breeding lines. This filly had a bad start in life, for her dam' 3 milk failed early and tho vaungster was hand-reared. Spwrfelt, the last Melbourne Cup winner, was hand-reared, so these early .misfortunes are not always followed by serious results.

Fool's Paradise, 10-0, was top*wcight for a seven-furlong welter at Randwick on New Year's Day. Hidden by J. Pike, he was not mentioned in the betting, and finished eighth, the time being linin 2o ; i sec. Mrs Otway R. Faulkiner provided the second favourite, Killarney, who head-heated for first place with /Janitor. ■ The Auckland jockey, E. Warner, who met with severe injuries when Kawa fell-with him in a hurdle race at the Thames Meeting on October 30th, and who was an-inmate of the Thames Hosoital for seven weeks, was able to leave the institution recently. Ho is still on crutches, and some time must elapse before ho is able to ride again.

The Manawatu Racing Club has not vet determined the date of its Autumn Meeting (says an exchange). Usually tho fixture- follows the next week after the Wellington- Autumn Meeting, but this year Wellington is racing a month earlier than usual, on-March 17th and 19th' owing to Easter being very late. Vossiblo Manawatu dates are March 30th and 31st, immediately on top of the Rangitikci Racing Club's fixture. Tt is reported that more likely dates are April 27th and 28th, the week following the Easter racing.

TROTTING NOTES.

Nominations for the Cheviot T.C.'s Annual Meeting close to-morrow at 9 p.m. Acceptances for the Hawke's Bay and To Arqlia T.C.'s Annual Meetings close on Monday. Arrangements have been made for a special train to Dunedin on Tuesday, January 25th, to convey horses engaged at the Forbury Park T.C.'s Summer Meeting. Great Bingen and Peter Swift are still located at Auckland, where they will be kept in training with a view to assisting at. the Otahuhu T.C.'s Spring Meeting nest month. Reverie, the four-year-old halfbrother to Napland, is a regular attendant at headquarters. Hb looks big in condition, and it may. bo some time before he is seen at his best. Peter Fashion, the promising three-year-old trotter in A. Cos's stable, is training on the right way and will fulfil h* engagement in the New Zealand 'Plotting Stakes at Forbury Park this month. While being exercised at Addington vesterday. Direct Tod dislodged his pilot, J. McLean, from the sulk,v and careered a couple of times around the courso beforo being caught. Fortunately no damage was ddlie. Tho Reefton. owner-trainer, V. AJborn, will assist at Forbury Park with that fine pacer, Golden Devon, and the Pctercta gelding, Peter Eyre. Sine© Event joined J. Henderson's stable at Oamaru the Dunedin-owncd pacer has not raced up to expectation In harness, and in future is likely to be tried in saddle. Cardinal Logan is having a short let-up, prior to being put into work for the Metropolitan T.C.'s February Meeting. The pacing mare. Vera Logan, has been placed under E. J. Smith's care to be prepared for future racing. 11. Gaskill is working Randolph at tho pacing gait, and the son of Galindo is shaping well with the straps on. 1-lerbilwyn, who has been in h. J. Smith's stable for several months, is stcadilv on the improve, and the Nelson Bingen gcldin'g may bo seen to advantage before the season closes. The death is reported from England of Mr J. French, who was for several years caretaker of the Metropolitan T.C.'s grounds at Addington.

Writing in the Australian "Trotting Record,"' J. S. AValt'orJ gives the following interesting information :—Concliff has been sold, and as might be antiuinatcd v.ill do his future racing in Xew Zealand. Conclilf is without doubt a freak pacer, and it will come as no surprise to those who know him best if, in the hands of trainer \\. J. Tomkinson, ho reduces all Australasian records up to two miles. A little over twelve months ago Condiff, then four years old, was first noticed on the Sydney training tracks as a very green horse.'putling up phenomenal furlongs, and when he made his first appearance in a race at Epping he was rushed in the betting, but he made a poor showing, and a demonstration from the crowd resulted in a six months' disqualification. Upon his return into the fold ho was entered in a £3OO handicap at Wellington (N.S.W.), and after standing several seconds on the mark lie went after the field and won by seven lengths in 3.30.V. The horse was then entered for the £SOO Handicap at Epping on Melbourne Cup Day, and it is a matter of history how he won in a comparative jog over the mile and a half in 3.21. Condiff's price has gone up by leaps and bounds. He was under offer for £4OO, and more than one owner is now kicking himself for not closing on it. He was then under offer at £IOOO. but an owner who wanted him offered £BOO, which was refused, and ho also is now putting tho boot into himself. A sum of £I2OO was then offered and rehired, £ISOO being tho price wanted, and, although no price has been made public, it is probablv at £ISOO that ho has changed hands. * At time of writing the actual New Zealand purchaser has not been stated, but as the horse is going into Tomkinsoirs stable it may ho assumed the purchaser is Tomkinson's principal patron, Mr G. <T. Barton. Ihc Australian horses with whom W. J. Tomkinson has made history," Happy Voysi«e 2.4/., Realm 2.32, and Minion Derby 4.22 2-0, were all old horses, with whom he had to take the. greatest caro in their preparation, but Condiff goes into his hands a sound young fivc-vciiMd stallion with all his racing days in front of him, and bar accidents a brilliant future is assured. TAKAPUNA J.C. SUMMER.
