NELSON DAY APPEAL.

January 6. j The beauty com petitions which have I been figuratively overwhelming Sydney I and its suburb; for a long time have j evoked the wrath of the National j Council of Women, and prompted tt. j at the instance in the first place of the i Catholic Women's Association, to take j a detinite stand against them. Even i beauty competitions, when one gets \ them ad nauseam, can sicken people. This is how Sydney generally feels about them. The Queensland and Victorian National Councils of Women are acting in concert with the body in this State, in protests against these competitions. The attitude of the National Council. broadly, is that these competitions, and the publicity to which the participants are subjected, arc demoralising to voung women, and tend to give them a "false view of their responsibilities and of the qualities which thev ought really to value. If. it is stated, girls would ' onlv reflect how unworthy these stan--1 dards would appear if applied to young I men. thev would hesitate before allow- ! ins themselves to be judged in such ! a wav. Whether people agree with the ■ views" of the National Council or not in I this matter, the fact remains that it ! ia tlv» mouthpiece in New South \\ alos [ of fiftv affiliated societies, with many thousands of members. Its protests therefore can hardly be dismissed lightly. WEDDINGS. CORBETT-STEVXNS A wedding of considerable interest was celebrated at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Ilakaia, recently, when Lucv Elinor, youngest daughter of Mr and".Mrs H. D. Stevens, Kakaia, was married to William Hugh, second eon of Mr James Corbett, Cricklewood, Timaru. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a becoming frock of ivory brocaded satin, with a georgette overdress caught at the side with a large silver rose. Her silk.tulle handembroidered veil was held in place by a coronet of pearl beads and a spray of orange blossoms, and she carried _ a pretty bouquet of white roses, Christmas lilies, carnations, and maidenhair , fern.

Mrs D. A. Roberts, of Christchurch, who attended her sister as matron of honour, wore a charming frock of mauve French voile, prettily embroidered, and a hat to match. Her bouquet was of mauve pansies, sweet peas, and maidenhair fern. Three little nieces of the bride were in attendance as flower-girh. They were Doris Smith, who wore a white silk frock, with lace overskirt. and mob cap; Dorothy Stevens, a dainty frock of shell-pink georgette, with pink mob cap; and Edna Welham, a frock of blue georgette, with mob cap to match. Mr D. A. Roberts (Christchurch) attended the bridegroom as best man.

S A. reception was afterwards held in the Town Hall, where the bride's mother received her guests wearing a smart frock of pale blue marocain, with black and white trimmings, and hat to match. The bride travelled in a sky-blue tailor-made frock, with hat to match. [ , MOUNT MAGDALA.
