'of Chinese residents in Wellington, in relation to foreigners in China, particularly the English. "The true Chinese is a man of peace. Ho sees no wisdom in war. His principle is that disputes should be settled by payment of compensation to the injured party—tho spirit which moves him in national, ethic, or filial duty and which calls upon him to pay careful attention to every want of his parents. "It is obvious that he cannot do this if he goes into battle and gets killed. The young Chinese who has not yet straved from the moral code of his forefathers is taught that the nobler sort of man emphasises the good qualities in others and does not accentuate tho bac}; the inferior sort does tho reverse. Also in private life he is taught to show respect in the management of affairs, to bo attentive and thorough in his dealings with others, to be honest and conscientious, and never to abandon those principles even among savages. "Your voung Chinese informant has evidently 'forgotten the teachings of his fathers," and the best that can be said of him is that his silly statements must have been provoked by the equally silly statements of the few New Zcalan'ders who call themselves 'The \\ bite New Zealand Party.'
