ARMY AND NAVY EXPENDITURE.
♦-- — GERMANY CAUSING ALARM. iltr CABLE--PRESS, association—copyright.; ('TUB TIMEB.") LONDON, January U. The Berlin correspondent of "The Times" states that the military- and naval estimates have caused much misgiving, as they show a considerable increase over last year. The military estimates have increased by 7,000,000 murks, and the naval estimates bv 30,000,000. The army consists of 3798 otlicci's, non-commissioned officers, and 72,329 other ranks. Ten million marks are allotted to the artillery for practice, and 3,000,000 for autumn manoeuvres, and 32,000,000 for munitions. The increases are attributed tu the rise in wages and prices. Critics point out that the estimates are steadily increased from ,year to vear For example, in 192b', the expenditure was 64,000,000 more than in 1925. The naval increase is attributed to proposed new construction, but the bulk of the money is required fjr the replacement of obsolete vessels. It is asked whether, apart from coastguard and scientific services, Germitny's expensive navy serves any useful purpose.
