Mr Goodall stated that he could not agree as he represented the Shop Assistants' Federation, by whom the matter would need to be considered. The chairman objected to Mr Goodall's attitude in coming before the Council with his hands tied. No agreement was reached, ami the quest ion was referred to the Arbitration Court. The chairman stated that it was the first time in his experience that a meeting such as this had failed at least to make some recommendation that he could send on to the Court. Buller Vital Statistics. The Duller vital statistics for December were: Births 12, deaths 10, marriages 4. For the quarter ending December 31st. there were 33 births, -_ deaths, and nine marriages. The totals for 1020 were: Births 113, deaths marriages 33, compared with 122, 63, and 27 respectively in the previous year. Dredging Returns. The last weekly of the New Eiver dredge at Dunguuville yielded a return of S3 ounces of gold. The dredge is now operating on a good payable around, and the outlook for the new vear ia very encouraging. Young Man Arrested. A young man, :t new arrival from England, was arrested at Blackball this afternoon on a charge of the theft of a sum of money. He will be brought before the Magistrate at Greymouth tomorrow morning. Denniston Miners' Union. The following is the result of the ballots taken for the election of officials to the Denniston Miners' Union: — President: W. Coppersmith, 210; J. Mcllwaiu, 211; majority for Coppersmith, S. Secretary: J. Hayes, 227; J. B. .Simpson. 20U; majority for Hayes, 27. Mechanics' representatives on the executive: W. liichards, 233: Frank Nelson. 223: V. Smith. 20$; J. Warren, 10!'. W. liichards and Nelson were elected. Treasurer: Turn Higgins, 'J7O: J. ColHnsou. 131; majority for Iliggius. 12S. Executive: T. Whittle, 330; T. Muir. 323.; J. Mcllwain. 294; J. Longmuir, 200; J. Kinnaiimout, 190: Leo 'Walsh. ]!)(!; A. Coppersmith. 193; Lew Daviess.
