* N.Z. SINGLES CHAMPIONi 'SHIP. CLOSE AND EXCITING GAMES. ' ' !. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEQIUM.) AUCKLAND, January 11. Beautiful weather again prevailed for the continuation of the New Zealand Bowling tournament to-day. In the 6ingJeß championship contest the following were loft in at tho end of the day:—No losses, Mclutyro (Hamilton); one loss, Bell, jun. (Hamilton) Walker (Auckland), Smellie (Green Island), Clarke (Rocke? Nook), Mahor (West End). It will bo noted that Suiellie is the only player from outside Auckland province still left in. Tho Australians' last hope of success, faded -with the defeat of Allatt (Victoria) by Mahor and Bell, jun. Keen interest was taken in the ninth round when Mclntyre and Maher, tho only two-lifers, wefe pitied against each other. Mclntyro played brilliantly, winning by 19 to 12. Walker had a close game with J. Hutchison (Dunedin). Walker holding the load until tho fifteenth head, when tho score was la all. With one head to«gp, the score was IS all, and in an exciting finish, Walker won 17 to 16. An even pegging contest was provided by Gray (Kelburn) and Knight (St. Heliers). Knight led 5-0 on tho third head, but his opponent then crept up and led 10-9 at the twelfth. After 10-all at the thirteenth, and 13-all at tho eighteenth, Gray was one up with one head to go, but Knight scored two to win 15-14. Bell, jun. and Duff had another even game, Bell winning 15-14, ' ELLESMERE ASSOCIATION. TOURNAMENT CONCLUDED. Under very agreeable weather conditions, and with the groan in splendid playinj order, the Ellesmere Bowling Association brought its annual tournament to a successful conclusion on the Leeston Club's ground. In both competitions, singles and doubles, Dunsande) p!ayer3 were auccesfsul, J. Burgess winning the singles and John Walker and G. W. Kime the doubles. These players showed good form throughout, and deserved their wins. In the singles, J. H. Hampton beat Withell and S. Johnston, M. C'urran won from J. Hannah, and Burgess defeated Curran in tho final. J Purser and G. W. Purser defeated F. Chamberlain and 11. A. Brown in the semifinals of the doubles, and later met John Walker and G. W. Kime in the final. At one stage the Leeston pair were leading by V to 1 and later by 13 to 4. Walker and Kime then had a remarkable mn of successes, scoring two fours, a three, a four, and a five. The game ended in favour of Dunsandct by five points.
