ROADS NORTH AND SOUTH.

TO THE EDITOR Of THE ■ PRESS. Sir,—l notice'in your issue to-day a statement by Mr C. F. Bennett, of Auckland, to the. effect that the North Island roads are in splendid order, which I must confirm, and admit the North Island is far ahead of the South Island regarding roads construction, and it is surprising to" South Islanders to find all main roads out of Wellington so far ahead of Canterbury, and it is obvious that the North Island is getting all the benefits whilst tha South Island appears. content to "let main roads go to pot. When one motors out from Wellington the roads are as near perfect as possible to Masterton one way, and to Pahnerston North, Napier, etc., the other. Even over the hills one could not wish for anything better.' Why is it that the South Island roads are so sadlyneglected, whan we have all the facilities for gravel etc., on the spot? The main South road is an. absolute disgrace. ■ whilst Akaroa, Hanmer, etc., are not much better. Surely it is time that Canterbury, at all events, woke up and put its roads in order, otherwise we must be prepared to give up our title to the leading motor centre of the Dominion.—Yours, eve, MOTORIST.
