[Houston Stewart Chamberlain achieved 6ome notoriety during the war as a "renegade" Jknglisbuiau living in Germany- Ho had always been a believer in the superiority of German culture, and when the war broke put he became a naturalised German citizen. His vigorous writings against the British created quite a stir' and were much used by. the Germans for propaganda purposes. He even went to the length of accusing a German newspaper, the "Frankfurter Zeitung," of having relations with the en«my, and was convicted of Hbd and fined 1500 marks. Chamberlain was the son of the late Rear-Admiral William Charles Chamberlain. In 1908 he mar* ried Eva Wagner, only daughter of the poet and composer, Richard Wagner. He had intended to enter the British Army, but was much troubled during his youth by illness and was incapable of standing the English climate. After living in»Geneva, Vienna, and Dies? den, and studying extensively in music, philosophy, and nistory, he settled at Bogneuth, in Bavaria, and began writing on subjects connected with German culture. He was 72 years of age.] -
