A good deal of interest, centres in the Northland Trotting Club's Meeting, which will be held on the Whangarei Racecourse to-day. Though there are only four horses in tho iNew Zealand Championship Free for All, over a mile and a half, those engaged represent the very best class, and Great Bingen, Acron, and Prince Pointer should provide a great battle. It is reported that Imprint has gone off considerably of late, but at his best he would cause the others a lot of trouble. On recent form Great Bingen holds the best prospects of success. In the Northland Trotting Cup ft very useful class is engaged, and a most interesting race should result. Canterbury stables will be represented by Kotuku Jack a brother to Prince Pointer, who did not show his true form at tho Auckland Meeting. The remaining events have all filled well, and horses likely to run well include Boycott, Elsa Nore, Roma Bingen, Marshall Neil, Bittern, Salesman, Peter McDonald, Goldfinch, and Reliance.

In 1912 S. Donoghuo rode once over hurdles in England, and won. He did not tackle the jumps again until recently, when ho had an unsuccessful mount. Donoghuo says he is not going ro make a practice of riding in jumping rates, and lie is still doing sufficiently well on tho flat to make it unnecessary. M. Beary, another llat-race jockey of prominence in England, is, however, going to take on hurdle riding as a regular thing. In November he was granted a license under National' Hunt Rules.

•Tho crack jockey. F. Dempsey, arrived at Fremantle (AY.A.) on Monday on his return to Melbourne after almost a year's absence in England, says the Sydney "Referee'' of December 22nd. To an interviewer Dempsey said it was indefinite how long he would stay in Australia this time. He added that racing was booming in England when he loft, and that, in his opinion, the betting tax would not affect it. Asked for his views concerning English and Australian racehorses, Dempsey opined that the best of our horses would hold their own with nine out of every ten in the Old Country. An enquiry was held after the last race at Keefton yesterday into the running of Hokioi in the Hurdles Race, for alleged interference with Lord Leslie when coming to llie last hurdle. Butler, rider of Hokioi, said the inteference was caused through losing his stirrup wiien rising for the last jump, and in consequence he was not able to control his mount. The stirrup being picked up by the clerk of the course, it was decided to take no further action in the matter. —Press Association.
