DAVIES WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. (FEESS ASSOCIATION TELEGItAM.) AUCKLAND, January 17. The New Zealand chess championship conluded to-day, A. "\V. 0. Davies (Auckland), winner of the title in 190*1-05, and again in 1908, being the victor. Erskine, oC Melbourne, was runner-up,lioir and Dunlop tied for third position.'' Erskino had to win all his three adjourned games in order to securo tho championship. Instead of that ho drew two, and won one by default. The results of the last round aro as follows: Gyles v. Davics.—On resumptiou of play. Gyles regained his piece, nnd a rush to queen a pawn followed, in which Gyles was one movo too late. , Dunlop v. Roberts.—Dunlop was unable to make any impression on Roberts iu tho end position, and a draw was agreed to. Selling v. Pleasants. —Pleasants allowed Kelling to win tho exchange, when pressed for time. Pleasants fought a stubborn uphill fight, but eventually bad to resign at move 41. Moir ▼. Erskine.-—With bishops of opposite colour, Moir had to be content with a draw. Earlier in the end game Moir had chances, but was pressed for time, and decided not to take tho risk, being unable to clearly ceo his way. Adjourned games from previous rounds resulted:— Severne v. Erskine.—For tho final adjournment in this game Severne had a pawn up in a very tight position. Erskine, by a good combination of rook and knight, played into position where he threatened perpetual check, to avoid which Severne would have had to risk a general break up of his position. As Severne was unwilling to do this, a draw was proposed, and agreed upon. Bullock v. Erskine.—Bullock had a splendid attacking position at tho adjournment, but failed to put in an appearance in time to resume, and lo?t by default. The final position of the player 6 is: — "Wins.
