—♦— PERSONAL. (SPICUL 10 THJ FSIS».) GREYMOUTH, January 6. Mr R. C. Hungerford, of Sydney, and formerly of Greymouth, who has been revisiting the Coast after an absence of nine years, will leave by to-morrow's express for Christchurch, visiting Dunedin, Wellington, and Auckland before returning to Sydney by the Ulimaroa on January 28th. Mrs J. Griffen left for Hamilton this morning on a visit to her daughter, Mrs L. Higgins. Mrs Griffen was accompanied by Miss H. Griffen. Mr C. D. Braidwood, who has been visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs J. Braidwood, High street, returned to Dunedin this morning. The marriage was solemnised at St. John's Presbyterian Church this morning of Doris,' daughter of Mr and Mrs T. H. Boustridge, Albert terrace, and Arthur, son of Mr and Mrs'J. H. Paddy, Frankton Junction. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. T. Todd, Christchurch. The bride was attended by her niece. Hiss Nessie Peillon, as bridesmaid, and Laurel Boustridge, as flower girl. Mr Hubert Boustridge brother of the bride, "'as best man. A reception was subsequently held at the residence of the bride's parents. Mr and Mrs Paddy j left by the express en route for the j North Island, where the honeymoon j will be spent. Mr E. Orange and Miss Orange, who j have been visiting Miss Badger, Saw- j yer's Creek road, returned to-day to j Wellington. j Miss Medlin. of Runanga, left this j morning on holiday for Wellington. j Misses Vera and Lena Blacktopp, of Wellington, are visiting their parents in Greymouth. , Open Sculling Championshp. j The open sculling championship in connexion with the Greymouth Eacing ; Club 's regatta was won by E. Williams. ! The competitors were: B. Williams, R. j Pascoe, and D. Magee. Magee had the j advantage until turning for home, but j Williams, who was rowing third, passed both in the straight and won by a comfortable margin. Magee was second. Williams wins the Mayor's Cup and the iaunch Euamono's gold medal. Dear Liquor. Charged at the Eeefton Magistrate's Court with stealing a bottle of brandy of the value of 18s, the property of Thomas McGillicuddy, proprietor of the Inangahua Junction Hotel, two men named Albert Sinclair and Thomas Hartigan entered a plea of guilty, and were each fined £1 and ordered to pay costs amounting to 19s each, payment to be made within fourteen days. Bowling. ! At the Hokitika bowling green, in a j game for the ferns, the challengers, Haybittlo and Howard, defeated the holders, Thiem and Breeze, by 25 to 18. Eeefton Kaces. The racing carnival will conclude with the Eeefton Jockey Club's twodays meeting, which commences tomorrow. The • weather .is perfect and the course in perfect order. There will i be a large, exodus of racegoers from ; Greymouth and Westport to-morrow to j attend the meeting. Motor-loiry Damaged. A motor-lorry owned by tho firm of Messrs Armstrong and Douglas, of Greymouth-, was damaged- by fire at Keat-' ing's Hill near Taylorville this afternoon. Pakapoo Bank. ! At'' the Greymouth Magistrate's Court this morning a Chinese named Hong Lee, described as tho proprietor I of a laundry in Richmond quay, was ' charged with keeping a common gam- | ing house. Mr W. Mcldrum, S.M., was on the bench. . . I 1 The case was a sequel to a raid made' ; on the premises last evening by Dctectivo H. C. Murch. _ In answor to his Worship accused stated that ho could "talk English a little bit but not very much." - Dctectivo Murch said that Hong Lee had been a resident of the Dominion for 45 Years, and be could speak English quite well. The detective stated that j in company with Racecourse Inspector Black, he noticed several young men going into the premises. Witness entered by the back door, the front one being locked, and found tho accused marking a pakapoo ticket. There was | a quantity of. pakapoo material about, i and a number of unmarked tickots. j When he raided the premises there we're I <>i<Wit young men the proi pnetov marked the tickets. Looking j in the other rooms, he saw nothiug but '• a boiler to indicate that laundry work | was carried on. It was known that j pakapoo was carried on in Greymouth ! and that the young mm who -indulged in the pastime did not got a straight i run for their money. •' Accused, when asked if he wanted to ! snv anything, shook his head. His Worship said that there was nodoubt the premises were a common gaming house, and that the accused was engaged 'in conducting a pakapoo bank. He inflicted a fine of £lO. Gerald Treanor, Robert Lees, Charles and Charles Southam were each charged with being found in a common gamine house. Each of the defondants entered a plea of not guilty. After hearing the evidence, Lees, Treanor, and Jowers were each fined 10s. His Worship said theTe was a doubt as to when Southam arrived on the premises, and the charge against him would be dismissed. Special Horse Train. A special horse train with 64 racehorses and trotters, which have been competing at the West Coast racing carnival, will leave for Christchurch at six o'clock to-morrow morning.
