The White House spokesman has announced that the United States Government's canal and naval rights, combined with the policy of protecting American lives and property, justified the landing of troops in Nicaragua. The United States long ago acquired the right to build a canal ucross Nicaragua and establish a naval baso in Foiiseca Bay, and it is intended to protect these rights. The rights to the canal were obtained on a ninety-nine year lease through tho Bryan and Camorro Treaty, the United States paying £600,000 towards the liquidating of the Niearaguan debt.
