NOTES ON THE RACING
(special to the press.) GREYMOUTH, January 5,
The Greymouth Trotting Club opened its S»mtner Meeting to-day at Victoria P3rk in excellent weather. There was a good attendance, and the course was in first-class order. Some interesting racing was witnes;ed, but the protest against Great Elect for interference, which was upheld, and two falls, did not add to the pleasure of the day's racing. The faTourites did not faro well, and several good dividends were returned.
The Guinness Handicap was a poor race, and practically a contest between Achray and Audrey Dillon, two of the scratch division. The first-named led from itart to finish, and won }n 3.45 4-5, a little better than 2.25 to the mile. The winner, Achray, is a goodlooking three-year-old son of Author Dillon and Bellena, and he is owned by the Christchurch sportsman, Mr T. Capstick. It was his first success as an owner for some considerable time. Audrey Dillon benefited by the racing he did at Hokitika, and beat all but the winner. Connie Dillon and Sylvia Logan finished third and fourth respectively, but some distance behind Achray and Audrey Dillon. The rest of the field gave a moderate display, and will require to improve before they are found on the winning list. There were no scratchings in the Express Handicap. Great Elect was favourite, with solid support for Connie Audubon. The exhibition of trotting was anything but satisfactory, and after giving a mixed display Great Elect and Connie Audubon, to -whom the former was conceding 72yds, passed the winning post locked together, the judge's verdict being a dead heaty Nellie Hugo trotted a sound race into third place, with Whispering Girl fourth, in front of a strung-oat field.
At the conclusion of the race, J. H. Dack, owner and driver of Connie Audubon, entered a protest against M. B. Edwards, driver of Great Elect, for interference, which was npheld. Connie Audubon was placed first and Great Elect second, and SI. B. Edwards wag fined. £lO.
Velocity, a six-year-old gelding by Jlnole from Prudish, ridden by J. W. Jennings, effected a surprise by winning the Electric Handicap, and paid a royal dividend. Sedmere paced a sound race into second place, with Kelburne close up third. Tnri showed a rare turn of speed, but tired, and was easily beaten into fourth place, the rest of the field being strung out gome distance back. The favourite, Carnival, began badly, and lost what chance he possessed in the first furlong. In the back straight the last time Harina fell and interfered with those behind him. Fortunately, his pilot, R. Phelan, escaped with a few bruises and a shaking.
The chief race on the card, the Dominion Handicap, attracted a asefnl field of thirteen horses. The coupled horses, Sahib and Key Logan, were favourites, with Wairna, Bold Bill, and Golden Devon backed in that order It was a good race for a little over a mile, when Golden Devop, from 84yds, put in his claim and won easing up from Bold Bill, Wairna, and Vera'g Doll, in the excellent time of 3.33. The winner, Golden Devon, raced consistently at the recent Canterbury Park Meeting, where he showed both speed and stamina, and judging by his display he is very well at present. Bold Bill waa forced to cover a lot of extra ground in the middle 1 stages of the race. The Addington-trained i gelding showed a fine turn of speed, but was left without a final effort. 'Wairna was in a good position at the end of four furlongs, when he broke and dropped back into the second division. Over the last half mile he came again, and staying better than Vera's Doll, gained third place. Sahib, Rey Logan, Yen, and Acre were prominent for a mile, where they faded out of the contest. Logan King broke in the early stages, while Lord Lytton, Haanui, and Deanwood ran a long way below their best. Whispering Girl was the only scratching in the Summer Handicap, and after trotting a solid race, Comfort scored a popular win, from Wee Olga, Sarsaparilla, and Little Johnnie. In fact, the Westport-owned mare was the only horse in the race that covered the journey without making a mistake. Wee Olga made a couple of mistakes, but stuck to her task, and under pressure defeated the speedy bnt erratic Sarsaparilla, who looked all over a winner more tfcin once, but lost an excellent chance through repeatedly mixing his gait. Little Johnnie did not show much speed, but made the best showing of the others, and finished fourth. Nourmahal was driven 'a bad race. At the end of a circuit she was in front, and maintained her advantage for a mile, when she stopped badly and finally finished a long way behind the placed horses. The Australian-bred pacer Margalong. by Ribboswood from Midnight, sheltered in P. Riddle's stable, was installed a warm favourite for the Intermediate Handicap. He was always well placed, but hsd to be fully extended to defeat Brigand, who, until quite recently, was engaged amongst the unhoppled brigade, but is now racing with the straps on, and wheu more seasoned should dp better. Wineberry, who was a long way back, finished third, and Springtime fourth. Lasonette was prominent for twelve furlongs, when he broke, and together with the rest of the field, finished in the ruck. Only six horses faced the starter in the Grey Valley Handicap. Queen's General was favourite, and was backed as if the issue was beyond doubt, but, although she paced a good race, she was easily beaten into second place by Okoura, who took charge at the end of two furlongs, and won with ridiculous ease. Harina looked like finishing second, and was only beaten in the last few strides by the favourite. After beginning slowly. Lord Lytton finished fourth, well clear of of Amy Audubon and Alpha Plu=. Speculation was brisk in the Dash Handicap. The pool totalled 3317 bote, and it was the best of the day. Cannonball and High Jinks, who v;&re making their first appearance on the day, were first and second favourites respectively, with solid support for Bold Bill and Wairua. The race had every promise of producing a fine finish, but, unfortunately, at the end of five furlongs Yen fell and interfered with those behind him, including Bold Bill and High Jinks. At the time of the accident Wairua was leading Cannonball,
while Trimmer, who -was just behind Y»n '.rhen the latter fell, luckily escaoed the accident. As tin leaders raced round the far turn. Trimmer closed on Wairua and Cannonbalh and, putting in a brilliant rs: down the straight, ha got up in time to win by a narrow margin from Wairua. who appeared to have the result in safe keeping fifty yards from home. The favourite, Can" nonball. was always well piaced, but a; no stage of the race did' the 'Reefton-trained pacer look a winner. High Jinks finished fourth with a buckled wheel. and Deanwood fifth. Yen and F. G. Holmes escaned injury, and Bold Bill wa3 palled up, and did not finish the course.
