CANCER RESEACH.

SYDNEY'S BIG FUND. (note ova ow* cosbksiohdeht.) SYDNEY, December 30. The attainment of the objective of £IOO,OOO, set by the Cancer Research Fund and reached in the main by small contributions in wonderfully quick time is a striking illustration of what can be achieved by well-directed organisation, backed by' the stimulus of a good cause. Of the total the school children throughout the State raised close on £SOOO. Investigations into the cause of cancer were commenced at the Sydney University about 18 months ago, and now that the amount sought is in hand it will be possible to tackle more aggressively and more 'systematically the causes surrounding the dread scourge. The authorities, however, are very wisely deprecating any encouragement of the idea that there will be immediate treatment of sufferers on a big scale. Much needed equipment, for one thing, has not yet arrived in Sydney. If the university authorities and the other experts they propose to bring in to aid them can now do anything to stem the tragic tide of cancer, they will have to thank in a big meausre the community and especially the school children and their parents for their practical and loyal co-operation. There has been no more magnificent response to a big public appeal in Sydney since the days of the war.
