STATEMENT BY HUGHES
- THE POOLAMACCA TRAGEDY. (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received January 4th, 8.60 p.m) SYDNEY, January 4. In a statement made to the police by James Hughes in connexion with the disappearance of the child Moss-Smith, at Poolamaoca station, near Broken Hill, he said he put Joan Moss-Smith on a horse, which became frightened when he pulled out his handkerchief, and threw the girl. As she showed no signs of life after a quarter of an hour, and fearinc he would be blamed for putting her on the horse, he buried the body in a rabbit hole, which he deepened He was sure she was dead when he buried her. [On August 24th, the six-year-old daughter of Mr Moss-Smith, of Poolaraftcca station, near.Broken Hill, disappeared. On December 28th an emr ployee of the«station saw a child's foot protruding from a. shallow grave, and unearthed the body of the missing child. It bore no signs of violence. Later, James Hughes, who left Mr MossSmith's employment shortly after the disappearance of the child, was arrested and remanded on a charge of murdering Her.T
