UNEMPLOYED.
APPLICANTS FOR WORK. Tho number of applicants for work at the Government Labour Bureau yesterday was almost as largo as, during the height of the unemployment period last winter, no fewer than 33 men • handing in their names. Although these figures would seem to indicate a considerable amount-of unplovmeut, they are really not sO bad as they appear, for the reason that it is not unusual at this time of tho year for men who come into tho City from the country to endeavour to obtain work in Christchurch. If they fail to do so, as a rule they return to their countrv employment. It is therefore probable that a similar position will obtain on the present occasion. For the week ended on January 3rd there were G6 unemployed on the list in the Bureau, this number being the lowest for some considerable time During the winter months there were as uianv as 400 registered. The majority of the 66 men 'are labourers. Of these employment was found for only four men because the office was open only for three days owing to the holidays. Another man was sent to a position yesterday.
