. LAST STAGE REACHED. In beautiful weather, tho United Club's lawn tennis tournament was continued yesterday. Some of the tennis was splendid, but the majority of the games wero fair. Play will be continued today. Results were:—'

LADIES' SINGLES HANDICAP. Semi-finals: Miss Donaldson (rec. 15) beat Miss Aitken (ser), 0 -'; Hiss Fleetwood (rec. 15) beat Miss Borrows (owe 15), 9-4. Final —Miss Fleetwood beat Miss Donaldsou, 9-6. MEN'S SINGLES (OPEN). Semi-finals —Denton beat How, U-l, 6-3; Wood beat Borrows-, 0-1, 0-5, (3-4. Final —Wodd beat Denton, C-'J, G-3. COMBINED HANDICAP. First Semi-final —Cullinan and Miss Scott (owe 15 3-G) beat Ross and Mrs Saville (rec. 15), 0-5. LADIES' DOUBLES HANDICAP. Second Bound —Misses Hewlett and Fleetwood (owo 10) beat Misses Mcllreo and Borrows (owe 15), 9-6. Semi-finals —Misses Scott (owe 15) beat Misses Heed and liohson, 9-G; Misses Webb und Aitken (owe 15) beat Misses Hewlett and Fleetwood (owe 15), 9-0. Final—Misses Scott beat Misses Webb and Aitken, 9-7. COMBINED (OPEN). CONCLUDING STAGES. The South Canterbury Tonnis Association's annual tournament was continued at the Timaru- Club's court yesterday in flue weather. Thero waß a largo attendance throughout the day, and as play reached the final stages some brilliant games were witnessed. This year's tourney has been tho most sueThis year's tourney has been the most successful yet held by tho Association, both tho standard of play and the public support being far better limn on previous occasions. Much of tho succoss of tho tournament was due to the energy of tho secretary; Mr P. G. Robertson and other officers of the Association.

Results wero as follows: Men's Singleß.—Semi-finals: Angas beat Ollivier, 0-3, 3-6 (Ollivier retired); Pago beat Ogier, 6-1, 6-1. Tho final will bo played to-day.

Ladies' Singles.—Semi-finals: Miss Ward heat Miss Rolleston 9-5; Miss Pearse beat Miss Wilson by default. Final: Miss Pearse beat Miss Ward, 6-3, G-l. Men's Doubles.—Scmi-finnls: Fulton and Boddy beat Angas and Sheppard, 0-1, 5-7, 6-3; Pago and Walker beat Hammond and Oramond, 6-4, 6-1. Final: Fulton and Boddy beat Page aud Walker, 6-2, 0-2, G-3.

Ladies' Doubles.—Semi-iinal: Misses G. and D. Manchester beat Misses Nicholls and Finch, 9-5; Misses Pearso and Thwaites beat Misses Poultney and Oldfield, 9-6. Final: Misses G. and D. Manchester beat Misses Poarse and Thwaites, 6-4, 6-2.

Mixed Doubles—Semi-final: Shcppard and Mrs Stedman beat Johnston and Miss Gibson, 9-8; Fulton and Jliss Manchester beat Craraond and Mrs Banncrman, fl-6. The final will bo decided this morning. NOTES ON THE PLAY. In the game between Ogicr and Pago to decide the finalist, Page won the first game on his servo. In the next game Ogicr won through Pago outing tour balls in succession. Page then Bcttled down, and by fine driving across court and down the line, he completely outplayed Ogier, and took the next five games, winning the set 6-1; The next eet was played similarly, Ogier taking the eccond game through Pago missing the lines. Page, however, took the other five games. • In the last third round gamo Hammond had no difficulty in beating Sheppard, the lattor not being up to his usual game, while Hammond's driving wa a very accurate. Ho took the first and second sets quite comfortably. The fourth round game between Hammond and Ollivier was a very pretty game to watch, both players being right on their game. Ollivier Bhowed superiority ifi placing, and this won him the set. In the second set Hammond made some brilliant and forceful drives, but Ollivier's consistency pulled the game through. The semifinal between Ollivier, and Angas was also most interesting. Ollivier opened strongly, driving to all parts of tho court, and work: ing Angas out of position. Ho took this set 6-3. There was not much brilliant play, but it was very consistent. In tho second

TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIPS. (FRSSB &BSOCUTION TBLBGBAM.) NEW PLYMOUTH, January 4. Tho Taranaki Lawn Tennis championships opened to-day in fine weather. Ahe .form displayed by a number of players in the earlier games gavo promise of stannous co£, later, t£ Visiting New South W»W team particularly showing excellent form. So far, none of the best players, including tho Australians, Lave been beaten.

Bartleet (Auckland) has notified the Dominion lawn tennis selectors that he is not available for the test match against the NewSouth Welshmen at Wellington on January 14th and 15th. D. (i. France (Wellington) will succeed (o the fourth position in the team, Knott and Sturt (the new doubles champions) playing fifth and sixth singles.
