CHESS TOURNEY.
♦- — (PBISI ABIOCUTIOX TKZGBAK.) AUCKLAND, January 4. Interest is still well maintained in the chess championship on account of four or five competitors being yet in the running for the title. In the fourth round Davies won against Fairburn, Severne drew with. Dunlop, Moir drew with Roberts, Bollock won against Kelling, and Pleasants defeated Miller. In the fifth round, Moir v. Fairburn (Ruy Lopez), Fairburn adopted the Berlin Defence, and lost the game through not taking advantage of his opportunity in the middle game. Moir eventually won easily. Pleaßants v. Bullock.—On resumption of play Pleasants gradually worked his extra pawn up, threatening the queen, and Bullock resigned after a hard struggle. Kelling v. Dunlop (Buy Lopez).—An exciting game, in which Kelling gave np an exchange for an attack, in which there proved to be a flaw. He thus missed a draw, and had to resign at move 85.
Gyles v. Roberts (Queen's Gambit Accepted).—Roberts retained the gambit pawn. Gyles attacked on the king side, which Roberts ably defended. Roberts eventually won a hard-fought game.
Erskine v. Davies (Dutch Defence). — Davies lost a pawn early by an oversight. A hard game followed, and it stands adjourned in an even position.
