A BOY DROWNED. | [THE PBEBS Bpec*»l Service.] AUCKLAND, January 3. A boy named Philip Clyde Ballantyne, only son of Mr and Mrs C. M. Batlantyne, of Te Kauwhata was drowned in Lake Waikare shortly before noon to-day. „ ~ In company with Messrs Hatfield, Minns, and Ramsay, deceased went, to sail a model yacht m the lake which is a short distance from his fathers home. The yacht got well away from the shore and the three men and the bov went out in a flat-bottomed boat to recover it. A strong' wind was blowing at the time and the water was choppv! When about. 160 yards out, one of the men leaned cut ia pick up the yacht, and this caused the boat to be swamped. The lad could not swim, and two of the men supported him until they got in difficulties. Ramsay and Hatfield had to make for the shore, and Minns and the boy sank. The boy did not appear again. Minns reached the shore. , The lad was a student at xungs College, and was spending his holidays at his parents' home.
