MOTUKARARA SPORTS.
WAIHORA CLUB'S MEETING. The AVaihora SporU Club was favoured with glorious weather for its annual meeting, J held yesterday at the Domain, Motukarara. In consequence, an unusually largo number of spectators were present, tho attendance being a record. Apart from their interest in the races, they found tho well-sheltered grounds of tho Domain an ideal picnio resort. Very satisfactory entries wore received for all tho races, there being over 20 running and about 60 cycling competitors. The track is not permanently formed, but the stretch of turf which served for both running and cycling was closely cut and in good order, The principal cycle race, the three-mile Waihora Cup, drew an entry of 29 riders, and was keenly contested. In the final, the winner, C. J. Sowden, who started from the 90yds mark, was in a bunch of three, who caught up with the leaders on tho sixth lap. Ho made a spurt on the last lap and won by a good chain. Hill, Weir, and Leathern, who were tho next in order, followed closely together. Immediately after the race the cup was presented to Sowden by Mrs A. S. Duncan, wife of the president, who contributed the trophy. Mr D. Jones, M.P., remarked that the race had been cleanly fought, and the winner had attained a great honour, on which he congratulated him. He also referred to the liberality of Mr Duncan in giving the cup, and to his interest in the sports, though no longer a resident of Motukarara. Cheers were given for the winner and tho contributor of tho cup. Mrs A. Johnstone, who nominated the winner of tho Ladies' Bracelet Handicap, was presented with the bracelet by the president, Mr A. S. Duncan. The bracelet was given by Miss Marewa Parkinson. Mr Duncan also presented trophies to Mrs Long ard Miss Gray, who were partners to the winners of the thread-the-needlo race.
The step-dancing events, staged on a platform on tho oval, had an interested following of spectators, several dancers journeying from Christchurch to compete. The judge waß Mr Caldow, who said that ho had had one of the most onerous day's judging in his experience. Tho patron of the club, the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C., Lady Rhodes, Mr D Jones, M.P., and Mrs Jones attended the sports during tho afternoon.
Several officials of the North Canterbury Ccntro of the Athletic and Cycling Union, under whose rules the sports were run, gave their assistance, including the president of the Centre, Mr W. J. "Walter. Under capable management, a long programme was put through with commendablo punctuality. The results were announced promptly by megaphone, and on a blackboard after each event. Mr W. C. Miller filled the office of secretary. Last night tho club held its annual dance in tho Motukarara Hall. The results of the day's programme were as under:— CYCLE RACES.
