FIRE AT WAIAU. *

A SPLENDID SAVE. About 9 a.m. on Sunday morning there was an outbreak of fire in the bakehouse of Mr H. W. D. Rogers, general storekeeper, and the building, together with an adjoining shed, was soon a mass of flames. Fanned by a fairly strong nor'-wester, these soon spread to the north wall oi a li-soe shed nearby which is used as a store for all kinds of stock. In a short time a large band of fire-fighters was on the scene, a bucket-brigade instituted, and a strenuous fight with the flames commenced. All.efforts were concentrated in an endeavour to subdue the hold which the fire had obtained on the store-shed, and to prevent its spread to other buildings. At one time the fight appeared hopeless, and it seemed as though all the sheds, the shop, and dwelling-house, and. the Coronation Hall and Library must go. By degrees, however, the efforts of the fire-fighters were rewarded, the flames were checked, and a fine save effected. Practically erverv man in the township turned out to the fight, as well as a large number of women, who did yeoman service in keeping-the buckets filled, thus allowing the men to keep up their efforts without a break. In fact, it was only tlie larg« number, assisted by the women, that made the save possible. The ba.kehouse, together with the adjoining shed, was completely destroyed, while the north wall of, the large store-shed was almost entirely burnt out and a considerable quantity of stores destroyed or damaged by smoke, fire, and water. Mr Rogers will be a considerable loser. As there had been no fire in the bakehouse since Friday, the cause of the outbreak is a mvstery.
