Practically the whole of Harrods' stock of jewellery, valued at £50,000, was cleared out by leisurely thieves, who are believed to have secreted themselves in tho btiildiug at night, departing in relays in taxi-cabs. Au open sido door led to tho discovery early in the morning. Only th« valuables stored in the vaujta esoaped the hands of the experts, who, after forcing tho steel doors of the inner jewellery-storo, spent at least- 10 hours prising open strong cues and selecting ovorything of real value, packing tho goods in trunks and suit-coses stolen l'rom the adjoining apartment. The manager asserts tho thieves must have been intimately acquainted with the routine of the establishment. They departed through a door which had been boarded up for years. The recording eloolts show that Harrods' watchmen visited every department every two hours. The thieves, in the meantime, apparently hid under the dust sheets covoring the jewel > cases.
