"THE SPORT OF KINGS." ' Miss Zitlah Bateman and. her company nojv appearing at the Theatre Royal made, a great hit. during the New Year holidays with lan Hay's brilliant domestic farce, "The Sport of Kings.' The play has come from. the Savoy; Theatre, London, and- captivatedSaturday night's audience with, its witty" dialogue and sparkling drollery. Miss Bate-; man carries'the burden of the acting and isvory capably, supported •by a' clever company. ■ "ELIZA COMES TO STAY.".- - "Eliza Comes to Stay," the third of tho comedies which will be presented by the ■ Joseph Cunningham's English Comedy, Co., under tho direation of Dick White and Eric Edgley, at the Theatre Royal, commences a season of two nights to-morrow. Tho comedy, which is full of lubtle'satire and clever dialogue, has a-tilt at the proneness of society to judge by appearances. The story describes the horror of a * young bachelor, when he discovers that a girl, well described as a "perfect fright,' has been willed on to him, and is coming to stay. After a week the bachelor can stick It no longer, and flees to Paris. Eliza then undergoes a decided change for the better, and when her guardian returns from abroad, he decides the best thing to do is to marry Eliza, who now calls herself Dorothy. : Miss... Zillah Bateman is at her best as; Eliza, and reveals rare artistry in her 'change ' to the- beautiful and charming-; Porothy- -Mr Campbell Copelin is well suited -to .tho-, character/of Sandy, the carefree bachelor," who' surrenders completely to the* charms ofhis .beautiful-.ward. Misß Henrietta it Cavendish is- ; dignified as Lady Pennybroke. As Monty .Jbrdon, the music master/ Frank Bradely." gives an excellent performance. For Thursday , the management announces a farewell night, when a souvenir photograph of Miss Zillah Bateman will be givento all members audience.
