(BY CABLE—FHESS ASSOCIATION" —COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND X.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.)
(Received January 3rd, 0.17 a.m.)
SYDNEY, January 2. Firo this evening practically gutted Metter's large six-storev building in Elizabeth street, extending 200 feet back to Nithsdale street. The chief occupants were Metter's store, Whybrow and Company, Guthrie and Company, boot manufacturers, and Trathan and Co., leather goods, all heavily stocked. Luckily there was little wind, otherwise the firemen would have been unable to save the other big business and residential premises surrounding, which they did after a hard fight, although some were damaged by falling debris and water. The police had much difficulty in keeping in check great crowds of Sunday loiterers. . The damage is roughly estimated ill the vicinity of £150,000.
