WAIKUKU BEACH GALA.

♦ A SUCCESSFUL DAY. The Waikuku Beach Gala, -which was postponed from Boxing Day oa account .of the -weather, was he'd on New Year's Day under most favourable weather conditions, and proved a very great success. In spito of tho many attractions offered by the Kaiapoi Beach Gala, Amberley and Ohoka e ports meetings, it ia estimated that over 2000 people visited the beach. A chargo • was made at the gates, which brought in over £7O, and tho estimated result of the gala was about £3lO. There were plenty of sideshows and guessing competitions, and tbe warm weather induced crowds to visit the scaahoro and have a dip in the surf. The proceedings throughout tho day were oulivtjied by excellent music provided by the Hangiora Brass Band. Id the guessing competitions much interest was created by the offering of- a suite of furniture to the valuo of over £3O. Mr P. Hoskins, of Beckenham, was the winner. Other guess-' jng competitions were.—Dressed doll, Mias Helen Cniin; iced cake, Mr It. W. Thompson (Spreydon); ra3* bowl, Mm Blackmore (Duaedia); bed spread, Mrs Lukey (Feudalton); smoker's companion, Mr W. J. Morris. ! In the evening a dancn was held in tbe Beach Hall,, and was well attended, the music being supplied by Mr A. G. Hunnibell's orchestra. The success of the effort is due to the energy of a large committee of workers, of which Mr N. Archer was chairman and Mr C. I'. Meyer secretary. , A good programme of sports was '.carried out. The results were as follows: Boys under 16—A Smith 1. v' Girls under 16—Linda'Wilkinson 1, Audrey Todd 2, Ngaire Brewer 3.
