CHESS CONGRESS.

—« FINAL STAGES. (PRESS ASSOCIATION* TILEGHAU.) AUCKLAMP, January 2. Gnat interest is being taken iii the Chess Congress as*is shown by the large numbers of spectators, among whom were Mr R. 11. Abbott, president of the New Zealand Chess Association, Mr John Mason, M.P., ex-cham-pion of the Dominion, and Mr Ewbank, president, of the Cambridge University Chess Club. Greetings were received from Mr Spender Crakauthorp. of Manly, New South' Wales. Australian chess champion, and

others. The visiting players and others were taken for a drive to the Titirangi ranges, and all enjoyed the beautiful scenery and mountain air after a week of strenuous play. At the conclusion of the section play on Friday the scores stood: — Davies 5. Dunlop 4?.. Erskine 4, Roberts 3s, Severne Moir o, Pleasants 2A, Fair- j burn L'£, Kelling 4 2*. Bullock Miller 2, : Jones lj. Gyles I£, Burry 1, Fouhy 1, Fen-wi»-k u. Hughes 0. Twelve of the abov«» qualified for the fiual section with scores brought forward as follows: Pavies 3. Dunlop 2A, Erskine 2, Moir 2, Roberts IX, Severne IA, Kelling 1?>. Gyles IJ. Kairburu 1, Miller 3. Pleasants a. Bullock 0. Jt will be noticed that section play operates strangely in. some crises. For instance, Roberts and Severne had wins in their section, and only carry forward IJ, whilst Gyles, with a score of only l£, carries forward 15, and Bullock, with a score of 2, goes into the final with no score. This- is owing to the fact of the scores against competitors who did not qualify "being cancelled. The results in the first round of the final are: Bullock won from Moir, Dimes iroui

Kciling, Gyles won from Kairburn, Dunlop won from Miller, and Erskine won from Roberts, whilst Severne and Pleasants drew. The second round of the final resulted: Dunlop won from Bullock, Roberts won from Fairburn, Erskine won from Kelling, Gyles drew with Severne, and Pleasants drew with Moir. Iu the gnme betweenDavies nnd Miller. Davies was unable to play, and the game was pui ofE to another timu.
