CANTERBURY PARK T.C.

SUMMER MEETING. PETER BINGEN AGAIN. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club was favoured with ideal weather conditions for the opening of its Summer Meeting on Saturday, and though the crowds at some previous New Year s Meetings have been larger, the attendance on Saturday was fully representative of the South Island s lightharness sportsmen. The track was in first-class order —very fast, in fact—and, with the exception of Peter Bingen, each winner and most ol the placed horses in tho various events improved considerably on what they were handicapped to do. Tho one exception was in the principal event, tho Canterbury Handicap, in which race such a muddling pace was set from tho start that the race developed into a mile sprint and did not thoroughly test the stamina of the horses engaged The first mile was run in 2.20 3-5, lair going for second-rate horses, and it was only in the last sis furlongs that any speed was produced. The race ended in a win for Peter Bingen, but it showed him up as a sprinter and did not in any way suggest that he uas a horse gifted with the stamina usually so necessary a qualification to win the good class two mile races. There ivere several noted reversals of form as compared with the very recent form shown at the New Brighton Meeting, but outside this the racing generally was clean and above suspicion. Under the direction of the club's secretary, Mr A. I. Rattray, all details were attended to faithfully, and the president, Mr J. I/eslie, and the other Honorary officials ' —ked after the visitors in most ho hie fashion.

It is something «ut of the ordinary these days to have to record an inrrerso in the totalisator investments as compared with the business done twelve months ago, but tho Canterbury Park Club is in the happy position of being able to record an ndvance compared with the corresponding day last year. The business done on Saturday is shown by the £37,995 invested on the machine, an increase of £lßl7 on the £36,178 invested last year. Dptai!s of the racing aro as follows :

All the acceptors for the Introductory Handicap took their places at the barrier, and after a rather disappoint ing contest The Toff won in a close finish and returned his supporters a very p easing dividend. Though first money went to The Toff, it must be said that ho had all the best of the race and his connexions were very fortunate that an objection was not laid far excessive galloping. Early in the rare The Toff went very unsteadily, and going down the back the last time gained a good deal of ground when he was plainly galloping instead of trottin® In the straight the driver or Nourmahal, who was in front,, cased out from the rails and, seizing the opening, J. Bryce, jun.. drove his horse hard to win with little in hand. It would have been quite easy tor J. Spillane, driver of Nourmahal, to have blocked The Toff in the straight, and a protest, had it been lodged for . excessive galloping, must ha* e very earnest consideration at the hands of the Nourmahal gave a good eshibition of trotting and the honours of the race rested with while Rose Audo was another who went steadily and was only gaining third place. Lady Ban galopwl for a good part of the journey, and Bonwood did not seem to have the speed necessary to win such a race. Bob Logan, whose form at the New Brighton Meeting last month did not give any encouragement to the public to • support him was made record favourite m the Templeton Handicap, but it was such a good betting race that when he won be returned a very satisfactory dividend Bob Logan was in a good position bright and early in. the race and after allowing Kibiringi, Logan Lily, Dillon Gold, and others to make the pace he came with a most convincing run over the last ha'f-mile to win in decisive fashion though evidently doing his best. Handicapped on 3.32 he-went 3.05 4-5, which tune gives a fair indication of the fast nature of the track and of the improvement that Bob Logan has made during the past few weeks. Logan Lilv who won at the Methven Meeting early last month, went a good race and improved close on sis seconds on her handicap time to win second money Great Earl, the'favourite,_ did not go away smartly, but he was in the firing line at the straight entrance after having made up a lot of and he should improve upon this display in the near future. Dillon Gold gave a much better display than he did at Ashburton last week, and also seems useful. Planet, ono of the well-backed division finished fourth and was closer then than at any other 6tage of the race. Rewanui, Genuine, Auto Minto, and Maud Logan were not well supported. and ran accordingly. The muddling pace set in the early stages of the 'Canterbury Handicap robbed the race of a great deal of interest for there was litt'e enthusiasm displayed while the first mile was being run. A good three-quarter pace was all that was maintained, and although Waitaki Girl was left badly, at the end of a mile 6he was within striking distance of the leaders six furlongs from home. Black Admiral set out to make the pace, but after two furlongs moro had been covered, Peter Bingen, with an electric burst, went to the front and, kept moving all the way, won his third bip race in the course of a month or so. The Nelson Bingen horse is becoming more solid with age, buc has had a good deal of luck in that races have been practically made to suit him. Black Admiral was interfered with at the start and bis driver. M. B. Edwards, was hemmed in and so unable to make a pace that would test the stamina of the others. This gelding looks very well just now and should be on the winning list again soon. Logan Chief bad every chance, but failed to race with any determine tion and Sheik, in a good position ; early in the race, did not seem to | possess his former great speed. Waii taki Girl lost a lot of ground at the 1 start, but outside this her form sugj gested that she is not at her best. i Locanda's Child, who has previously disappointed his connexions, got to the front early in the Lyttelton Handicap and he stayed thero to

win very easily after improving considcrably on his handicap time, and Ins displav of pacing was distinctly pleasin(, Zolock Paim who finished second, owed his to the vigorous horsemanship of M. B. Edwards and tho Hal Zolock mare gave her nder a bin job. She is a likely-looking sort and it is rather unfortunate for towards that having just acquired the maro he should have to go fast for so little recompense. Grey Cloud ana Wairua appeared the most likely of the unplaced division to do well in tho near future. . , lhanks to a quick beginning and patient handling by his driver, It. \\ . Franks, Duke Bingen atoned for 6C.'era) previous disappointments when he won the Stewards' Handicap ot two miles vcrv easily after being in front all the time. I>uke Bingen went steadily all the way and several times during the race Franks let the Nelson Bingen pacer have his head when lie put big breaks on the field- T' ,e remainder were kept hard at it all the wav to keep near the leader, and though not generally recognised as- a good two-miler, he was probably less distressed than most of Ins opponents at the finish. The track and atmospherical conditions were all m his iavour Frisco Beau stayed on better than usual and trotted very so idly over the last round, and Lee Todd, in a good position early in the race beat horses who went unsteadily in patches. Handicapped on 4.48, Duke Bingen. in registering 4.42 3-5, improved considerably on the time ho was set to d °The Islington Handicap provided a very fine contest and St. Maura, well handled by F. G. Holmes, made ner run at the proper time and, hard driven stalled off a chal.enge from Golden Devon who narrow.y defeated Bessie Logan for second place. Bessie Logan. Onimet. Succession, Vera Logan, and Brentloc were always in the leading division, and amongst: those iikelv to do better are Bessie Logan and Succession, while Becky Logan, coupled with St. Maura, was uever prominent, and her form cannot be taken as correct. St. Maura has been racin" badly of late and at tho liuhu*Rfoeting in November she started several times without being promroeent. At New Brighton she started m the' Mace Memorial, two miles, won by Harold Burwood in 4.38 2-5, and on the second day in the Beach Handicap of one and a-quarter miles, won by Cardinal Logan in 2.49 1-5. In winning on Saturday in 2.45 3-<j, St Maura improved on her recent efforts, but the fast state of the track may be justification for the improvement in time made. . Edith Locanda, trained by Jl. B. Edwards, was withdrawn from tho Railwav Handicap, a mile saddle race, and Edwards took the mount on Binpen Lad. who, after racing well at the New Brignton Meeting, had performed disappointingly at Ashburtou This time the dry track suited him much better than did the moist conditions of Ashburton, and once properly going be never left the issue in doubt. Handicapped on 2.18, he went 2.15 4-5, and from off this mark it is not unlikely that he will win again when track and weather conditions suit. Final McKinlicy only beat Macanda by a head for second place, but her rider, J. "McLennan, could have made tho marein considerably bigger had ho desired. In fact he rode a very confident race for second place on the four-year-old filly, who lias had several hard ra.'-es of late and may perhaps do better when more matured Macuida and Nipper were hard ridden but had no chance with the first and second lio:ses Lord Bingen did not show speed at any stage of the race, and Lady AY aywai'd broke up badly. It is not often that a straight trotter wins a mile race amongs-t the pacers but the quick beginning Master Audo, always amongst the leaders in the Au Revoir Handicap, made those opposed to him look second-rate He won very easily in 2.15 2-5 by smart going. High Jinks went a good solid race, showing a fine burst of speed rounding the turn and into the straight, hut he had no charirt- with Master Audo and had to be fully extended to dispose of Hydaspes, who as usual showed extreme brilliancy in the early stages. Berenice broke up at the start and Rufino, prominent for ha.'f a mile, faded out when real business commenced.
