CHRISTMAS TOURNEY. *
The Christchurch Golf Club held a rcry successful and enjoyable Christmas tournament, consisting of three days' vlay, which I concluded on Saturday in ideal weather. I The events of Saturday were a bogey handicap in the morning, which resulted in a tio between Miss Betty Cotterill and M. H, Godby, each of whom returned a card of 7 up on bogey. In the afternoon a Canadiau foursome bogey was played, and won by A. "VV. Morgan and J. 0. Kiehnrds, with o score of 4 up. The tie in the Christchurch amateur championship, which was played last Tuesday, was played off, and was won by C. A. Seymour, who did a 72 against a 74 by I\. A. "Wilson. SOUTH NEW BRIGHTON MORE PLAYGROUND WANTED. ANNUAL GALA HELD. Residents of South New Brighton aro strongly desirous that children, and adults too, should have ample playing spaces, and the proceeds of each year's gala go towards that object. The Pleasant Point Domain was tho scene of this suburb's annual gala ou Saturday afternoon, large crowds attending and distributing their sixpences and shillings on the many amusements offering. "The aim of tho South Brighton residents is to make the place the most popular in Canterbury," said Mr T. Robins, chairman of the Gala Committee, at tho opening ceremonv. The Mayor of New Brighton, Mr J. Gamble, in opening the gala, offered tho large crowd the season's greetings, and expressed his pleasure at the presence of Mr It. \V. Hall, Mayor of St. Ivilda, who had attended to gain a comprehensive idea of New Brighton's seaside attractions. He urged all to give their heartiest support to the gala, which would result in a general improvement of the suburb. Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., said that the gala served a very useful purpose —that of providing playgrounds for tho children aud improving the Domain, There was •»!« movement on foot all over the world to provide more recreational areas, and Now Zealand had not.in this respect kept abreast as much as it might have done. Ho hoped that tho women of the community would band together to give the movement all possible assistance, not forgetting the provision of playground appliances for the use o£ tho children. , , , Mr Hall " said that his eyes had been opened aa never before, and urged all to help the movement. During the afternoon the New Brighton Municipal Band played a bright programme of music. Other attractions included chocolate boards, quoits, weight-guessing, shooting, the usual games of skill} and host's of stalls and booths. . The gala was continued in the evening, dancing taking place on & specially-prepared 11001 ' ' ATHLETIC. EVENTS.

Niue boats competed in an open yacht race, the result being Warau : (C. Balfour, skippor) 3, Dotterel (0. Allen) Fidget (E. Morrison) 3, Secret (R. Gormack) 4. Demonstrations of hydroplaning and aquaplaning were given by I'. Poore, K. Cameron, and H. S. Beaumont. The takings amounted to £290.
