• annual sports. The annual scurfs. held uuiier :lie auspices u£ the North Canterbury Caledonian Society at the Ambttley Domain on Saturday, ■were favoured v.-ith beautiful weather. The meeting v,-as largely attended, many city people taking advantage of the opportunity. An excellent programme was provided, and the officials are to be congratulated cn the manner in which the meeting ivas conducted. Some very interesting sport was witnessed, and the cycle events evoked plenty of enthusiasm. This, no doubt, was due to the appearance 01 I' 1 . J- Grose, the New Zealand amateur champion. hxcept in one event, in which he met with a mishap, Grose won nil he contested. Uose finishes wore usually the order of the athletic events, which were keenly contested. Plenty Of variety was afforded by Highland music, and dancing, a department, of the programme which was always interesting ana enjoyable. Following are the results.

The contest for the honour of Miss Akaroa, in Queen of the Carnival, is now becoming exciting, and the various committees are hard at_ work in gathering money at all descriptions or functions. Dances have been held every night during the week, and side enow events have been, in some cases, most unique. On Thursday night a moonlight picnic was held at Tikao T5f v - a™ a large journeyed over by launch to participate. Although the recent wet weather was uncomfortable for'visitors, an , those engaged in out-door work, it has proved most beneficial to the pastures and gardens. The ground had become very hard and dry, and everything was beginning to show a parched appearance. SOUTHBRIDGE. Mr and Mrs F. It. Anderson, who have taken up their residence at Temuka, were entertained by the parishioners of St. James's Church of England. Soutbbridge, at a farewell social in the Parish Hall on Thursday night. There vras <i good attendance at tiic function. First prizes for a euchre tournament were won by Mrs W. Mackrell and Mr Alex Greenwood. On behalf of the parishioners, the ltcv. H. G. Hawkins presented Mr and *. Anderson with a dinner set as a paring gift. He made special reference to tje great interest Mrs Anderson had always taken in various church activities.
