CARS. ORDER FOR 10,000. It was announced during the week (says the Sydney "Daily Telegraph of recent date) that an order lor over 10,000 British cars and trucks had been placed in England for the Australian market during 1927. The announcement was made by Mr S. A. Cheney, of S. A. Cheney Motors Proprietary, Ltd., one of the largest motor-car farms in Victoria. Some idea of the magnitude of the order can be gauged from the fact that it is lb in excess of the total export of British cars to Australia during last year. Included in the order are 9000 Morris cars and trucks. Mr Cheney stated that the firm had recently purchased a controlling interest in Williams Bros., Ltd., the New South Wales distributors of Morris cars and trucks, for £150,000; •the Franklin Motor Co., of Adelaide, for £89,000; and F. MeCowen and Co., for £120,000: also the Australian Distributors Proprietary, Ltd., of Melbourne, a subsidiary organisation, which will handle Austin cars, for £87,000. , r . This huge order of 9000 Morris cars and trucks will be distributed as follows : _New South Wales, 2850 cars and 1400 trucks; Victoria, 2500 cars and 1250 trucks; South Australia, 750 cars and 250 trucks. The total value of the cars and trucks to be imported nest year, it is expected, will exceed £3,000,000. Mr Cheney said that the firm's order would be a net gain for British products, as previously it had handled only American products, and that he had maintained on his return from England, in September that the salea for British cars would be five times greater this year than previously. The progress made by the motor industry in Britain, he said, was a revelation.

A pioneer in the motor industry, Mr Cheney first started in the trade in 1903, and in 1915 was associated with the Dodge organisation in Adelaide. Later he went to Melbourne, where he obtained the Chevrolet agency. Prior to going; into business on his own account, he was associated with Lane's Motors, Ltd., in Melbourne. It is expected that the two senior Williams brothers will retire from business, but the two younger members, Messrs R. and P. Williams, will remain on the board of direotcrs. Messrs S. A. Cheney Motors Proprietary, Ltd., have a working capita] of £650.000, and a nominal capital of £1,000,000.
