In spite of the somewhat unpleasant weather conditions, great numbers of people have visited the beach during the Christmas season. The business people of the borough speak generally of having had a fairly busy time, and are reasonably satisfied with the results. On Boxing Day, which turned out warm though with somewhat overcast skies, there was a very large crowd of visitors, and all the several sidebliowb grouped at the pier were well patronised, while the surf attracted many bathers. Scout Camps. Two separate Scout camps are being held in the borough by the Salvation Army Scout movement. One is in the Rawhiti Domain, where the girls' branch of the movement, known as the "Life-Saving Guards" are under canvas. In this camp, which is under the command of Major J. Powick, S.A., assisted by Mrs Powick, Lieutenant G. Hoare, and Mrs Bailey, of Waimate, there are over 50 of the Girl LifeSaving Guards. The other' camp is pitched close to Mr G. Johansen's farm just off Frost's road. Here, under the care of Regimental-Sergeant-Major D. Carson, and his wife, are sixtyfive Boy Scouts, thirty-three of whom aro from Waimate, the others . being members of the Sydenham, St, Albans, and Linwood Troops. Scout-Leader L. Lord fills the post of Q.M.S. A large woolshed and fourteen tents suitably provide accommodation for this party. The boys are having the time of their lives, and look very fit.
