NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
Tides. It will be high tide on the beach today at 12.37 p.m., and in the river at 1.58 p.m. To-morrow (New Year'g Day) the tides will be respectively 1.29 p.m. and 2.51 p.m., while on Sunday it will be high tide on the beach at 2.21 p.m., and in the river at 3.49 p.m. The Christmas Holidays. In spite of the somewhat unpleasant weather conditions, great numbers of people have visited the beach during the Christmas season. The business people of the borough speak generally of having had a fairly busy time, and are reasonably satisfied with the results. On Boxing Day, which turned out warm though with somewhat overcast skies, there was a very large crowd of visitors, and all the several sidebliowb grouped at the pier were well patronised, while the surf attracted many bathers. Scout Camps. Two separate Scout camps are being held in the borough by the Salvation Army Scout movement. One is in the Rawhiti Domain, where the girls' branch of the movement, known as the "Life-Saving Guards" are under canvas. In this camp, which is under the command of Major J. Powick, S.A., assisted by Mrs Powick, Lieutenant G. Hoare, and Mrs Bailey, of Waimate, there are over 50 of the Girl LifeSaving Guards. The other' camp is pitched close to Mr G. Johansen's farm just off Frost's road. Here, under the care of Regimental-Sergeant-Major D. Carson, and his wife, are sixtyfive Boy Scouts, thirty-three of whom aro from Waimate, the others . being members of the Sydenham, St, Albans, and Linwood Troops. Scout-Leader L. Lord fills the post of Q.M.S. A large woolshed and fourteen tents suitably provide accommodation for this party. The boys are having the time of their lives, and look very fit.
South, Brighton Gala. At a meeting of the executive of the South Brighton Gala, it was reported that everything was in order for the district's annual festival which is being held at Pleasant Point to-morrow. Very thorough provision had been made for the safe conduct of transport, and a capable officer had been appointed to direct same. Given fine weather this year's function should easily outclass any of its predecessors. 8.A.0.8. At the meeting of local Lodge No. 4645 of the 8.A.0.8. on Tuesday, the following officers were elected: W.P., Bro. Calson; D.G.P., A.B. Knight Neate; HSI Bro. Gallacher; assistant C.b.i., Bro.
