NOTES ON THE RACING. (SPKCIAL TO TBI F-BSSS.) The Manawatu Racing Club's Meeting was concluded in brilliant weather before a fair attendance. The racing wbs high-class, close finishes being the order. The starting was open to criticism, especially the undue latitude allowed to a badly-behaved horse in Inferno, who broke the tapes repeatedly, and was a menace to other well-behaved horses. In the Tiritea HnrdlM, Lady Passenger ■was a slightly better favourite than Blood Ked, with Sottana nt a good price. Little River led out from Lady Gay, Lady Passenger, and Blood Red. Passing the stands the order was Little River well clear of Lady Passenger, with Lady Gay and Blood Red next, and Sottana and Glenldle last. Little River drew away passing the six furlong post, but Lady Passenger and Motu closed on him again, across the top, with Sottana moving up. The field bunched at the last fence, where there was tome scrimmaging, and once over Sottana drew up to Lady Passenger and Motu. Sottana beating Lady Passenger by half a length. Motu was a head awajr third. Blood Bed was fourth, and GUfnidle next. Sottana did not jump too well, but he had too much pace on the fiat, and finished In great style. For the Whitmore Handicap Pangolin was a very decided favourite, with Acred solidly backed, and the winner, Some Lad, at a joy price. Petal began best from Archon, Pangolin, and Acred. Elyslanor moved up crossing the top, and Some Lad improved his position. Petal was beaten at the turn, where Acred led from Archon, Pangolin, and Elysianor, but the hat-named ran very wide, and Gourmet ran off the course. Acred, Pangolin, «nd Archon were battling out the finish, when Some Lad and Capitulation joined in. Some Lad won by a length from Acred, who beat Capitulation by a head. Pangolin and Archon were next. Some Lad, patiently ridden, won in gobd style. Archon should have done better, but had to bo bustled in the early stages. In the Juvenile Handicap Helen wa3 slightly better backed than Paleta, with Reckless and Arrow Lad well and evenly backed. After a long'delay at the barrier, due to the vagaries of Helen, \Faleta, Recklets, and Tom Bracken began best from Duck's Egg and Arrow Lad, Helen being the last to move. So the; raced to the turn, where Paleta and Tom Bracken drew away from Reckless, the pair fighting out the finish, Paleta Winning by a head. Crown Area finished on two lengths away third, with Reckless fourth, and Arrow Lad, Wild Pigeon, and Helin next. Paleta won very nicely, and Tom Bracken gave an improved showing. The Liverpool Handicap 'saw Rerefnoana a very hot favourite, with Civility slightly better backed than Joy Bird and Buoyant. Civility led Out from Joy Bird and Peneus, after Inferno by hisaatios had delayed the start for a very long time. Turning into the back straight, Buoyant and Joy Bird led Herdmoana, Civility, and Peneus, with Bennanee and Inferno last. Inferno, Peneus, and Civility improved their positions going across tho top, where Buoyant was beaten. Inferno, Joy Bird, and Peneus led Civility and R«retnoana at the turn. Civility did be*t in the run in, and beat Inferno by a head, with Penaua half a length away third. Hermnoana wu fourth and Bennajioo and Joy Bird next. Civility won well, for it was a, desperate race and at a fast clip all the way.

In tho Weatbury Handicap, Precious, Bank Note, White Kinglet, and Powhiri wexo a)l well backed. Volplane, Misa Pat, and Royal Time were all slow away, and Bank Note led out from White Kinglet, Powhiri, Precious, and Royal Game. Bank Note shook off White Ringlot at tho turn, and then was challenged by Powhiri, the pair righting out a desperate finish. Bank Note won by a head, with Precious threequarters of a length away third. Royal Game and White Ringlet were next. Bank Note's performance was. really good. In the Clandoboye Handicap, Tioga finished up a, £4O better favourite than Allmarimba, with solid support for Polar, Kil- - and Bonhomme. The last-named delayed the start, and when they were let go AllruarimbA led Kilmise, Bonhomme, and Ngata. Rating down the back, AUmarimba' and BoDhomme led Kilmlss and Santonio, with Tiega, Polar, and Ngata next. There was little change to tho turn, where Bonhomme shook off AUmarimba and KUmiss joined In, followed halfway up the straight by Tiega. Desperately ridden, Tiega got up to beat Bonhomme by a nose, with Kilmiss two lengths away third. Santonio was fourth and Polar arid Allmarimba next. Tiega w«) responsible for a bigh-claes performance.

u'or lue Chriatnias Handicap, Te Koroke whs a iiitJo bettor bucked thin Black Mint, with plenty of support far Great Day. It was a good betting race. Zajrieeo led lot a. furlong from BronstelL, Great Day, »nd Ladykiller, but at the five-furlong battior the order was Zwisee, Black Mint, Great Day, Brcnstell, and Hypnotic. Wilderness and Barryanda made itet runs right round to the turn, otherwise the order was the same. Black Mint was in front a, furlong from home, but Wilderness and Groat Day headed him off, only to succumb in turn to To Kotcko, who finithed v/ 011, and won by » head from Great pay. Wilderness was three-quarters of a length away third and Black Mint and Hypnotic next, with Barrv. anda heading the others. Te Koroke won well.

In the Kawau Handicap, Lady Bentinck was a good favourite, with Plain Sailing, Firßt Acie, and Epistle well backed. Lady Bentinck led off from Tnkia, Anthonie, and Plain Sailing, and Gleninnie last. Plain Sailing led across the top from Lady Bentinck, Gold Box, Tukia, and First Acre, With Mireusonta at the tail of the main bunch. Plain Sailing looked the winner at the turn, but Lady Bentinck stayed on very well and beat Mireusonta, who came with an electric rush in the straight, by half a length. First Acre was half a length away third, with Gold Box fourth, and Plain Sailing and Tukia next. Lady Bentinck won Well, hut V»*naonl» was rejutalsible for a wonderful performsnee.

NOTES ON THE RACING. (special to ths peDss.) The Oak Handicap brought <ut a. big field of twcnty-onn unhoppied trotters, but it produced a very poor race, as more than half the competitors made mistakes at various etages. Tamerlane, who hod arrived th« previous day after winning at ABhburton on Monday, was sent out favourite, with Elzear and Brian Bingeu next in the betting. Kizear gave a much better display than on Tuesday, and settling to her work in good stylo was in front at tho end of half a mile, end was never aftorwards troubled. Tamerlane waa going well, when Molly Audubon interfered with him entering tho second lap, and he was unable to make up tho ground he lost, in addition to which the right-handed going was unfamiliar to him. Roma Bingen was in eecond place with a round to go, and she finished in that position, but had no chance with the winner. Molly Audubon finished third, but was distanced for t unduO galloping, and Marble Star was placed third. Tamerlane was next to finish, and then came Katuto and Peter McDonald

The Tramway Handicap brought out another big field, Beck Hintcm being the only scratching, but after Una. Dillon had gone out on the track it was obvious that she was unlit to race, and she wa-a withdrawn, the totalisator investments being returned. Th© bracketed pair, Haydock and Hoamer, carried most money, with Shadowlaiid also well backed. Haydock, and Grattftn Thorpe refused to leavo the mark and took no part in the race, and Shadowland was never in the picture. Goldfinch was quickest to begin, and leading all the way won easily by two lengths from Logan Rothschild, who was always in second place. Amaris put in Some good work over the last three furlongs, and finished third, a neck in front of Hiehore. The winner, who is an aged mare by- Geld Bell from Miss Dunmore, is owned by Mr W. Johnstone, a Waikato sportsman, but Is trained by R. E. Mills at New Brighton. She paced very nicely all through, but it wae not a very bigh-clasß field that she beat.

Tho Penrose Handicap was contested by a brilliant lot of pacers, and it produced a race worthy of the class. Great Bingen wae a warm favourite, carrying about twice as mttoh money as the second favourite, Nelson Derby. Groat Bingon was a trifle slow in striking hia hopples, and Talaro lost a little ground at the start. Imprint went away qUiokly, but at the end of half a roilo Nelson "Derby was in front, followed by Imprint, Talaro, Bonny Logan, Prince Pointer, Great Blngen, and Jack Potta. Going along the back Prince Pointer put in a faßt run which took him into third place, and then Imprint loet his chance by breaking. Nelson Derby wae first into tho straight, with Talaro, Prince Pointer, and Great Bingen in hot pursuit. Putting in one of his characteristic finishes, Great Bingen got up in time to win by half a length from Talaro, with Nelson Derby a neck away third, Prince Pointer being fourth, and Jack Potts and Bonny Logan together next. It was a great performance on Great Bingen's part, and his time of 9.40 3-5 is only two-fifths of a second outside Minton Derby's New Zealand record. Talaro added further to his consistent record, and once on the journey paced a fine race.

Heal the Great and Trampiast wets much better backed than any of tho others in the Christmas Handicap, for nnhoppled horses, but the former was slow to begin, and did not threat-en danger at anv Stage, while Trampfaet refused to strike hie gait and took no part in the race. Kelson McKinney showed a good turn of speed in the tarly stages, and was in front with a round to go, but broke badly in the back stretch and dropped right back. Roi Alto, The Tartar, Wimmera King, and Wild Nut were in the firing line when they turned info the straight, but in the last hundred yards Toll Chimes put in his claim, and, finishing stronglv, won by halt a length from Wimmera King, with The Tartar only a head away third and Roi Alto a neck further back fourth. Both the winner and Wimmera King were neglected on the machine, and paid good prices. The Dominion Handicap produced a rattling finish between Jewel Pointer and Marshal Neil, the verdict going to the former by a nose. Marshal Neil was unlucky in losing a good deal of ground at the start, while Machine Gun. who was second favourite, met with a mishap to his sulky, otherwise he would have been very hard to beat. Rotuku Jack was in the lead early, and he was still in front half a mile from home, but Jewel Pointer, who was always well placed, drew out in the ftraight. though he lnd to be driven out to beat Marshal Neil. Transport ran a good race all through, but wbs beaten tot speed at the finish. Sea Pearl was the only scratching for the Summer Cup, Queen's Own being made a good favourite, with about -500 mere than

Peterwah, while Holly Boy was also solidly backed. It was a very interesting race, though marred to some extent by mishaps. Glandore gave some trouble at the start, and after going a furlong Imprint fell, while a little further on All Bell came to grief. Lady Dunmore and Hughie Wallace piloted the field for over a mile and a half, but Hughie Wallace then took charge, and led in'o the straight from Kohara, Holly Boy, and Locanda Mac. When the real pressure was put on Hughie Wallace was beateu, and Holly Boy, finishing brilliantly, won by a head' from Acron, who showed something of his real form in securing second rlacc, a long neck iu front of Kohara. Locanda Mao gave a much better showing than on Tuesday, and after bim came Lady Dunraore, Auto Machine, Queen's Owu, and Peterwah. The last-named was trotting in great etyle when he broke. Holly Boy has done remarkably well since he entered Tomkinsou's stable, and in his last eight starts has wou live times.

Escapade, who came to grief in the Rowe Handicap on Tuesday, was backed down to a very short price in the Epsom Handicap, and .'he duly won. but it was only by the narrowest of margins, from Peter Swift, who h;id lost a lot of ground at the start. Betty Moko and Bonny Spec were always in the picture, and Pete Peter also gave a fair showing, but found the pace too solid at the finish.

Rain was falling when the Ranturly Handicap was run. Sea Pearl was sent out a good favourite, but she did not begin well, otherwise she would probably have woo. Nelson Tasker was quickest away, and he led into the straight, where Stanmoor was close on his wheel. Stanmoor took charge half-way down the running, and. driven out, held his position. Sea Pearl put in a brilliant finishing run. and the judge placed her second, half a head in front of Nelson Tasker, while Holly Boy, penalised 12yds for his previous win, was flying over the last furlong, and was only three-quarters of a length away. Time 2/18. NOTES ON THE RACING. (SPECIAL TO "THE FBES3.") The twelfth annual Meeting o£ the Winton Trotting Club was hold in bright sunshine and on a fast course. The attendance was good, £504 being taken at the gates, as compared with £443 last year, but the totalisalor turnbver, 513,654, showed a drop of. £615 as compared with last season. The racing was good, and in most cases the fields large. Author Jinks, by Author Dillon from Lady Jink, was nearly as well backed as Homolight in the opening ovent, and after wait ing on Perky Locanda and Needles for six furlongs, he went up to the former, and the pair drew well clear of the others. With

a couple of furlongs to go, Author Jinks i wa* three lengths in front of Perky Locanda. but was eased up in the straight, and won hv half s length from Perky Locanda, with Chiming King ten lengths off third. The favourite was never prominent. Times 3.3-4 1-5, 3.34 3-5, 3.37. The South Hillend Handicap was a very poor betting race, only Watersong being soiidlv supported. Ho went away well, and was quicklv in charge, but Buck Up, who has not been going off smartly, on this occasion began very quickly, and was in front nt the end of half a mile. The favourite broke after going sewn furlongs, and Swiftest ran into third placo with half a mile to go. Buck Up won, casing up, by live lencilis from Swiftest, with Koger «likes eight lengths off third, just in front of the favourite. Times —3.42, 3.47, 3.50. Tennessee's Child, Mnrinca, \N oodpointer, and Tho Sheik were withdrawn from the Winton Trotting Club Handicap, and on his good showing at Gore on Jlonday, Logan Hanlon was backed down to an even money chance, carrying nearly twice as many investments as Lingfield and Ding Dong Bell, who were tho next fancied. The story of tho race is easily told, for Lingtield was out in front- all the way, winning by a length and a half from Ding Doug Bell, who inst beat the favourite in the last stride or two for second money. Logan Haulon s driver alwavs had his horse close up, after losing a little at, the start, but was outside one or more sulkies for ten furlongs, and covered much more ground than any other horse in tho race. Sandown turned round at tho start, and Springnote broke after going half » furlong. The pace was on nil the wav, and the field was badly spreadeagled at the finish. Times—4.44, 4.41 2-5, 443 4-5. The winner was purchased by his present owner from Mr H. P. Nicoll, and this is the first race ho has won since. Liberal, who won on the same course in heavy going last month, was sent out a very" hoi odds-on chance in the Stewards' Handicap, and, taking charge within the first fifty yards, had Cardinal and Blue as hia only companion to the. home turn, the pair drawing out twenty lengths from the othei'3, who were well spread out. Once in the straieht Liberal drew out and won pulling up by lengths from Cardinal and BJuo with Nelson Fay -six lengths further back third. Times-3.36 1-5, 3.39, 3.40. In a big field for the Presidents Handicap, Great Bell, who won so easily at Gore, was made favourite, with Exotic, Wattle Patch, and Lock Bingen also well supported. The favourite, taking charge early in the last mile, never left the issue in doubt, and won easing up by six lengths. He is by Great Audubon from Myrtle Bell, and a very tieeactioned horse. Aretotis, a four-year-old gelding by Petereta from Bellfiowcr, showed a lot of pace, and after breaking two furlongs from home, came again, and outstayed Kenwood Bell and Jade for second money. Times—s.4, 5.10, 5.3. In a, good field of sprinters Zenith was made a better favourite than Day Pointer in the Speedwell Handicap, with good money also for Logan Lad and Golden Dawn. The latter, with Northope, lost ground at the start, and Zenith led Day Pointer over the first. quarter, but then broke, and Day Pointer, closely attended by Cardinal and Blue and Logan's Dnve, led the remainder of the way. At the home turn Logan's Drive looked like reaching Day Pointer, but the latter responded well, and beat bim by three-parts of a length, with Cardinal and Blue only a, nose awar third, and Logan Lad close tip fourth. Times—2.s6, 2.56 3-5, 2.56 4-5. Perky Locanda was s ent out nearly an even-money chance in the Members' Memorial Handicap, but hia chances wero shortlived, for, after coing a counle of furlongs, bo collided with Rosaleeh, and both were capsized. Neither rider was hurl. Revolt, Last Bell, and Author Jinka, who was penalised 120, all stood on their marks. Ailor the accident Robert Bell, a nice-gaited gelding by King Daphne from Meddle, was left in front, and was followed over the first mile by Chiming Thorpe, Kelson McElwyn, and Lady Zita. There was no change over the last bit, and Robert Bel! stayed on to beat Chiming Thorpe' by nearly ten lengths. Dick Swithin was close un third. Chiming King was going very well in second place at the home turn, but put in a bad break. Times—3.43, 3.46. 3.44. Red Admiral, who was just beaten at Gore in 2.17 4-5, wa s backed down to a very short odds-on price in the Farewell Handicap, but was very sore, and not able to strike out at all freely. Zenith, who went away very smartly off the limit, led throughout, winning very easily by five lengths from the favourite in tho good time of 5.18. The other times were 2.18 1-5 and 2.18.
