AUSTRIA'S PLIGHT.
UNION WITH GERMANY PROJECT. FAVOURED BY VATICAN. (BI CABLE— PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND H.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION ) (Received April 6th, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 6. The special Vienna correspondent of the "Daily Express'' states: '.'Vatican influence, which proves a powerful factor in Central Europe, has abandoned the formerly cherislie ;uis for the ultimate restoration of the Hapsburgs in Austrin and Rupprecht in Bavaria. Instead, the Vatican is supporting the union of Austrin with Germany.
"This would add 4,000,000 Roman Catholic Austrians to Germany, making the Roman Catholic population of Germany 4-5 per cent., which is believed to be sufficient, with the aid of one other party, to give the Catholics political dominance in Germany,
"Austria is at present in a very serious plight. With 300,000 dole-draw-ing unemployed, out of a total of 6,000,000, she is being throttled by Czechoslovakia's, Poland's, and Jugoslavia's fantastic prohibitive duties. Ninetv per cent, of Austrians regard union with Germany as their only hope of salvation from • strangulation and ruin."
