DEER HERDS.
PROTECTION TO REMAIN UNTIL END OP STAIJSING SEASON. The Hon. Sir E. Heaton Ehodes, Minister of Defence, in acknowledging a letter from Mr C.. W. Hervey, secretary of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, with reference to the proposal to remove protection from all deer in New Zealand, writes:— "With reference to your enquiry as to what the position is regarding the Eakaia and Poulter river deer forests next season, the Minister of Internal Affairs tells me that the protection will not be removed from these deor herds where the Societies have already issued licenses for next season.
"I have written a long memorandum to Mr Bollard on the subject of the total removal of protection, pointing out to him that the Societies which utilise the revenue from licenses to thin out deer will now have no funds, or incentive, to do so." The secretary of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society has received the following telegram from the Hon. W. Nosworthy:— ,l Minister of Internal Affairs informs me that he thinks it undesirable to remove protection on deer until the close of next stalking season. He proposes to communicate at an early date with the Acclimatisation Societies."
