THE WEATHER.
SUMMARY FOR AUGUST. (PSESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, September 7. Mr Bates's weather summary for August states that during the month the weather was generally dull and wet, though on the whole fairly mild in the north, but very bleak at times in the south. The rainfall appears to have been below the average in the Auckland Province and on the West Coast of both islands, but greatly in excess in the Coast, especially of the. South Island.
A storm of somewhat local character occurred in Canterbury on August 6th and 7th, with heavy rain and snow and bleak weather. A cyclone passed in the north between August 12tii and August 15th. accounting tor the high east to south-east winds and some heavy downpours'. Anti-cyclonic conditions followed and the highest reading of the barometer, 30.675 inches* was registered at Wellington on the morning of the 17th. An intense westerly disturbance passed Jin the South Island, with a barometer reading of 28.95 inches at the Bluff on the 23rd, and was preceded and followed by very unsettled weather. Snow, hail and thunderstorms were reported at various times oh the high country of the South Island, and some sleet at the lower levels. The wet weather was a great hindrance to the farmers' operations in Canterbury, and the growth of grass was delayed . by several frosts and dull weather' in mapy other parts of the country. SNOW ON THE COAST. (rBESS ASSOCIATION teijsgjiav.) REEFfON, September 7. A heavy fall of snow occurred at Reefton yesterday, being the sieatest for 10 years. Ten inches fell at''Waiutr. and 18 at Big River. KAIKOURA. The weather report for Kaikoura, as submitted by Mr T. Harlc (Hapuku), for the month of August is as follows: ■ —A wet month with, rainfall much above the average. . Eain fell on sixteen days, with a total of 7.13 inches, compared- with 1.79 in. for. August-dast year. The maximum fall for one day was 2.55 in, on the 7th. Heavy rain (1.36 in) also fell oh tho 25th. The weather, generally during the month was cold,. with a considerable fall of snow on the hills. The rainfall for the last four months has been 40.00 inches, compared with 10.69 inches for the same period last year.
