MALVERN COUNTY.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. All members were p'resent at tho meeting of the Malvern County Council held on Tuesday last, at which Cr. Knight presided. Tenders for water-race cleaning were let to Messrs Roper and Smart, Kennedy, Painter, Bradshaw, and Vickery, but the work in Bruce's reserve and on the Pig Saddle road was held over for further information. Or. Hawke moved that Courtcnay and Homebush bo each given an additional representative qn the Council. The motion was lost, only Crs. Hawke, Cullen, and Adams voting for it. Cr. Judd presented a scheme for the improvement of the field work, and gave details of tho equipment required. After full criticism of the scheme, it was decided to appoint Mr G. L. Popple as engineer, subject to the approval of the Tawera County Council, and to take steps to improve the pound cottages at Parneld, 'Waddington, and Coalgate to accommodate permanent roadmen. The Selwyn County Council asked for a greater'share of the upkeep of the Selwyn bridge than was at present paid. It was decided that the question should be deferred until the erection of the proposed bridge over the Selwyn on the main highway was completed, to see what effect it had on the through traffic. The Police Department wrote agreeing to take over the reserve at Coalgate when it was cleared, and the Council would then be responsible for the Toad frontage only. The Council recorded its appreciation of the action of the Department in the matter. The matter of decking the bridge over the "Waireka at Greendale and the one over the Hawkins at Hawkins was con 'icred, and a report from the consulting engineer will be obtained. Electric Power Board. At the last meeting of the Malvern Electric Power Board there wore present : Messrs Judd (chairman), Hall. Oliver, and Millar. Apologies were received from Messrs Deans and Mulhollaud. The District T. :.!graph Kngineer wrote drawing attention to the ndvisal.'ilif y of avoiding the erection of transmission lin.'s parallel with tho Department's wires from Christchurch to Greymouth wherever possible. It was considered that Clinton's road might be quite as good a route as the main highway, and the consulting engineer was asked to make an inspection in the near future. Authority was given to proceed with the line between Messrs G. Gillander's and J. Clinton's properties, so that Greendale might be supplied at an earlier date than w;<.s at first onticipatcd. The engineer's report stated that the Greendale lines were progressing as favourably as the wet weather would permit, but, pole carting had been delayed for three weeks owing to the breakdown of the contractor's hauler. Over nine hundred poles had been erected to date. The canvass of the Waddington Area has started, and it was arranged to make a complete canvass of prospective consumers dependent on the main line as soon as possib;e.
