Many friends, especially on the West Coast, will be sorry to hear that Mrs Fair, sen., and Miss Ella Fair of Wellington, who are spending the winter in Sydney, are both reported to be il) in hospital. After a round of visits among friends and relatives in the North Island, Miss May 0. Brown, who, as. "Sister Scatterjov," is well known in Christchureh, paid a short farewell visit to her parents at Murray-Aynsley Hill, and left last week for Sydney hy the Maheno. Her marriage, which was postponed from July, will take place this month.'
The Wembley Club is holding a grand carnival dance in St. Mary's" Memorial Hall, Manchester street, to-night, when many entertaining-novelties-will be introduced, and a snowball ballet be danced by pupils of the 'P. There was an excellent attendance of members aud guests at-the Wentvrorth Cabaret Club carnival in the Wider Garden on .Saturday night, and the function proved a great success. Music, was "supplied by Bailey 's Jazz Band and Large's Jazz Baud.

A very successful ."old lime" dance and progressive euchre tournament was held by the bowling section of the .Belfast. Sports Chili on Saturday night,, the Town Hall being taxed to utmost capacity. Music was supplied for dancing by Mrs P. Thomas, Messrs; F. Comyns, sen., and A. Johnson, and Mr F. .Rudkin was the M.C. A very enjoyable evening party was given recently by Mesdames Cook (Blenheim) and Scott, at the latter's residence, " Dillonsdalc, " Charwell Forks. Progressive five hundred occupied the first part of Ihc evening, the winners being Miss Gibson and Mr Riches, the consola'tion prizes falling to Mrs Johnston and Mr Norrie. After a dainty supper dancing was enjoying, the evening closing with the singing of "Aukl Lang Syne." GOLF BALL AT HORORATA. A very successful function eventuated ill the Public Hall on Thursday night, when the annual golf ball was held. The hall was. beautifully decorated with pretty coloured poppies and streamers of old rose and black (the club's colours) suspended across the ceiling. Hie walls wcro decorated with greenery and the stage was furnished as a urawing-room, and the suppertables were gay with spring flowers.' Excellent njusic was supplied by Bradford 's- Orchestra (Christchureh); extras being played bv Messrs- S. Parker and D. Mitchell. Much credit is due to'the untiring efforts of the committee,' and Mr C. D. McGarry, honorary secretary, as the function -was an outstanding success.

DANCE AT DARFIELD. The Darfield Memorial Hall was the scene of a very enjoyable gathering on Friday evening, when tho Hall Committee organised a dance to raise funds to extinguish the debt' on the building. In spite of very bad weather conditions, there was a good attendance and the fund benefited considerably thereby. The decoratiou of the hall was carried out under the supervision of Mrs J. 0. j Redfern and consisted of large hanging j receptacles filled with' branches of pussy willow and bamboo foliage. Splendid* music was' supplied by Bradford's Orchestra. The supper was 'given and served by the ladies of tho district, Mrs D. Gillanders and Mrs Jas. Reid being in charge of a band of helpers. FANCY DRESS PARTY. .St, Michael's Hall was crowded with children and adults on Friday evening, oil the occasion of. the annual -fancydress party. SUNBEAM KINDERGARTEN. The committee of the Sunbeam Kindergarten met on Wednesday, Mrs J. R, Evans in the chair. The other members ' present were: Mesdames F. A'Court, Carlisle, C. Stringer, H. van Asch, H. H. Wauchop and H. S. Batchelor (hon. secretary). Apologies were received from Mesdames 0. Williamson and -F. W. Freeman. The Kindergarten opened on Monday, August 31st, when 34 children wero present, three new pupils being among the number. When the weather irnr proves, it is hoped that the number will reach the average before the end of the term; the staff intends to pay many visits during the month. The removal of two large willows is a great improvement to the kindergarten garden. The sub-committee was instructed to complete arrangements for oilcloth for kitchen, etc., which will cost about £l6, A further discussion took-place-as-to "Daffodil Day" when, the Sunbeam Committee will be in charge of tables at Ballantyne's corner from 8.30 until 4.30. Contributions wero promised to tile cake and sweet stalls. A vote of thanks was accorded "Mrs Carlisle for organising a bridge partv, which realised £3 profit. Mothers'- subscriptions for the month amounted to ,£1 9s. ' "

BALL AT LE BON'S BAY. The residents of J,e Bon's Bay held a most successful ball on Tuesday. The weather was perfect, and visitors were present from Akaroa and other parts of the Peninsula. Spirited music was supplied by Bradford's Band, which came from Christchurch by car. The hall was decorated with crimson and blue streamers and native fern. The accommodation was taxed to its utmost. there bc-inp; well over a hundred pcoplo present, and a most enjovaile tinif was spent, by all. Messrs J. Gilbert and A. Crotty were efficient* M.C.'s.

DANCE AT KAIAPOI. The annual dance of the Kaiapoi Girls' Friendly Society was held in -the Drill Hall on Friday night, and was a well-attended and most enjoyable function. The ballroom was gay with balloons, streamers, and hanging baskets of greenery. Johnston's Band supplied the music for dancing and supper extras were played by Stokes's Band from New Brighton. The M.C.'s were Messrs A. Gordon, J. Jowers. E. Forrest and J. McAllister. A; lucky spot wait* was won by Mr J. Mo mo and Mrs Scott. Progressive euchre was played by non-dancers, the prizes being" won by Mrs G. Green and Mrs Ta vend ale, Mr W. Clements and Mr F. Clark.
GOLDEN WEDDING. Pn Saturday at their residence, 106 Edgeware road, Mr and Mrs H. Zimmerman celebrated their golden wedding. About forty guests assembled in the dining-room, which was decorated with violets and daffodils, and a large wedding cake was on the tea table. Mr O'Connell proposed the toast of host and hostess, and congratulated them on their fifty j'ears" marrjed life. Mr Arthur Zimmerman responded on behalf of his mother and father. Games, dancing and musical numbers were much enjoyed. The following were present: —Mr and Mrs H. Zimpjerman, Mr and Mrs J. Kearney, Mr and Mrs A.
