LOCAL AND GENERAL. Evading Arrest. A man sought to evado arrest in Lyttelton early yesterday morning bs -jumping into the harbour and swimming from ship to ship and pier to pier for forty-five minutes. Parliament. The House of Bepresentativea sat until nearly breakfast time on Saturday morning. In the trying hours before the dawn tempers nearly gave out, and there were a few unpleasant exchanges. Fusion. The Hon- itr McLc'od, speaking at Hawera oi> Saturday, repeated his charge pgainst the Nationalists that r.hcy went into the fusion negotiations to bargain for portfolios. Hailstorm. A heavy hailstorm was experienced in parts of North Canterbury on Saturday afternoon. At Eangiora, it is reported, hailstones were as big as pigeons' eggs. Football. Keports of football matches played on Saturday in Christchurch and elsewhere appear on page 3.

Seamen's Strike. A special meeting of the Australian Deportation Board was held on Saturday. Certain vessels on English articles have sailed from Australian ports. Strikers at Southampton made vigorous attempts to prevent volunteer crews from manning the vessels. Slffi Victory. A Spanish communique admits that the Eiffi forees have been largely successful in a counter-offensive. Airship Disaster. Charge's of culpable negligence have been made against the United * States Navy Department in connexion with the Shenandoah disaster. Canadian Elections. The Prime Minister of Canada has announced tho early dissolution of Parliament. Yawl's, Long Voyage. An Englishman and his sixteen-year-old daughter have sailed from Plymouth in a nine-ton yawl, eii route to New Zealand.
